Maybe, but the timing of all this makes me think that Matta's health was becoming too much of a hindrance which Smith didn't anticipate.

Just this morning there were reports that Matta was going to retire after the upcoming season, so Smith probably figured it was best to cut him loose now than waste another year.

OSU had just paid him a bonus on April 30th for being the coach. Gene Smith said they'll honor his contract by and large.

Seems like either a recent thing with his health or the fact that he whiffed on a shite load of recruits, or maybe a combo of the two.
