My son just started playing and he’s fallen for my tennis racket. Is there a modern racket that’s similar in power in weight?

For reference:

Glad to see your boy moved from one gay sport to a less gay one

This will be his 6th varsity letter (4th sport) and he’s a sophomore…left one on table too, by quitting soccer.

I use to love playing Tennis when I was a teenager. I wish I would have someone to play with as a fat adult. I'd probably break a hip if I tried to play though....

Find yourself a pickleball court. Much easier to find people to play with.

Why not just buy him one of those if he likes it?

You can actually find some originals on EBay.

But I wouldn’t want to be using a 90 vs. all the other kids playing in the 100 range.

For reference, I love that racket. In was THE RACKET when I was coming up first starting in tennis. Every lsu player used one.

Having said that, it would be like choosing to use a wood bat in an aluminum bat league (not quite to that level, but you get the picture). He will be sacrificing significant power by using it.

That racket was great when the game revolved around being around the net

Prince graphite was one of the best balanced racquets ever.
Do not get him this.
He may like the new babolat.
If he is any good maybe the Wilson blade or there are also some other Wilson racquets that might be a little more forgiving.

For the OP, Babolat Pure Drive is what I recommend

Go to a store and see what feels good. New technology can't be beat. Even modern ones that are inexpensive are still better than the older ones. Like having a modern driver for golf vs one from the 90s.......starting at a huge disadvantage.

Yeah, I was raised on Prince Graphites. You had a decent amount of Wilson back then and a little bit of Head, Pro Kennex, Dunlop, and Yamaha. I took a break from about '95-'2010 and was overwhelmed when I got back into it. Obviously, Babolat took over, but it seemed like every brand had like five different lines with three variations. Most racquets seemed thick and hollow with no feel. But, I get it like you said, everyone is playing with 100 sq. in., thick beams for a reason. Except for someone playing every day, I don't know how most people decide on a model now with so many choices.

None of that even gets into strings.

I hit with a guy tonight and both of his rackets were strung with old nylon…he complained about not getting enough spin. Told him to string one with PSG 17 and it would change his life.

My graphite is strung with Poly, that stuff is heaven.

Frames are overrated anyway. For beginner/intermediate players, just getting the right head size and a weight that feels comfortable is all you need imo.

Honestly I think they perhaps still sell this racket?

My favorite racquets are the babolat pure drive and my all time favorite is a Head YOUTEK IG Radical Pro. I think it was the racquet Andy Murray used
