Damn that Wolf baw is a horse.

Not sure I could ever root for anyone with ties to Ohio St though.

quote:

So is there anything official about how tournaments, or who at the tournament, gets to award wildcards to?

"They are usually awarded to players from the home and/or sponsoring country (sometimes after a tournament where the winner is awarded the wild card), promising young players, players that are likely to draw a large crowd, have won the tournament earlier or players who were once ranked higher and are attempting a comeback (for instance, following a long-term injury). High ranked players can also ask for a wild card if they want to enter a non-mandatory tournament after the normal entry deadline, for example because they lost early in another tournament. This means a wild card player sometimes becomes the top seed."

And Monfils withdraws.

Daniil with back to back finals. Have to assume he will pull out of Cincy or lose early.

Courts at the Open might be a little slow for him, but I think he’s the biggest threat to the big 3 there... yet still not much of a threat.

Poor Monf. Yet another reason not to attend anything that is not a major. I'd be sick if I had night session tickets.

I think I've said it before, but Medvedev's strokes are so interesting. He seemingly hits the ball late and scoops it back with slingshots. Can't really remember anyone hitting like that, maybe Mecir for you older guys.

That’s a good description. He hits so flat that he doesn’t need much backswing at all to generate pace. The precision required to play like that is nuts.

Strange to see a tourney director openly admitting slowing the surface down.

But I love how the media turns this...

“We slowed it down a bit more so the players can be on an equal footing between the big hitters and the good returners, so it should suit him (Nadal) a little better.”

into a headline of...

“Montreal Open 2019 Courts Slowed Down for Rafael Nadal, Suggests Tournament Director”

That’s not just clickbait... it’s basically fake news.

Announcers also hate his strokes, but he’s obviously got something that works for him

Wow, Serena just withdrew down 3-1 with back spasms. The Canadian goes on a great run to win the crown.

I don't even see the issue if they did intentionally slow down the courts to help Nadal. What reason would there be for any casual tennis fan to attend the tournament without Nadal making a deep run? Djokovic and Federer isn't there and neither is Murray and Delpo and the women are playing in a completely different city. It would basically be a glorified 500 tournament without Nadal's involvement. They should do everything to make him happy.

Would have loved to have seen Andreescu win in a better setting because the Canadian crowd would have been much more excited than they were.

Hope Serena is ok.

He should and he will. Rafa’s locked into the #2 seed for the US Open. There’s literally no benefit for him to play Cincinnati. It’ll just add unnecessary wear and tear to his legs.

I'll say he plays.

1. Montreal wasn't exhausting
2. Defending 0 points
3. First match probably Wednesday
4. Easy draw before the final

4 wins and he gets 600 points, which could come in handy later for seeding.
