The same could possibly be said about Rafa. He's not as old, and his play hasn't dropped off when he's healthy, but he's been healthy less and less frequently. Simply put: his body is breaking down.

He probably wants to catch Fed in majors, but it just ain't happening. He can't stay healthy long enough to capitalize on is momentum. And with Novak back in top form, he's no longer the best player in the world on any surface except clay.

Novak will probably end up with the majors when it is all said and done. I think he is going to have another awesome two to three years of winning 3/4 majors a year or close to it.

I feel that a 100% Novak will also beat Nadal on clay next year in RG. He might lose to a lower seeded player before he gets the chance to face Nadal, but if he makes it to play Nadal then Novak will win.

i think so toi. although his ranking is such that he's going to have to go through qualifying for most tournaments. that's gotta be humbling to go from #8 in the world to outside the top 100 in one year

I would respectfully disagree on this point. Rafa v. Novak at Wimbledon was basically a dead heat. And that was Novak back in top form. And Rafa, unbelievably (and seemingly impossibly) seems to have gotten better on clay the last two years (maybe not better than in his first (2008) prime, but close).

I think if Rafa goes into 2019 RG healthy, he wins it again. I would not be surprised if that ends up being his last major win, but I do think he's likely to get one more RG, and it'll prolly be this year.

Happy New Year, boys. Nice to see some tennis in Oz and Kiwi land.

Nadal pulled out of Brisbane with a quad issue. Kyrgios already lost there. The draw is decent with Grigor, Kei, Milos, and de Minaur.

Djokovic is doing his thing in Doha. That draw is mainly garbage.

I thought Auckland was this week, but that must just be the women. I know some folks are in Perth with the Hopman Cup.

Cracka, we need you back for the new year, buddy.

I wonder what kind of shape a lot of these dudes are in coming off of winter/holidays. I'm guessing they try to keep in decent shape so Australia is not total shock to the system, but it's probably tough to replicate those conditions unless you train in Dubai like Fed or live in Mallorca.

I would imagine that temperatures in Mallorca around this time are pretty cool.

But your question is an excellent one. You've gotta figure that there's some subset of players that diligently train in that "offseason" period, and others that just let themselves go a little bit. I think we know what group the big four fall into. And I think we also know what group Jack Sock falls into. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.

ETA: and totes agreed that it's going to be impossible to replicate australian conditions unless you live in Australia, or somewhere else in the southern hemisphere (where it's summer). With that in mind,I might posit that the garbage tune-up events for the Australian Open are more essential than the ones for other majors

I saw a few games of her yesterday. She didn't look quite as emaciated as she has recently, but definitely not packing lbs on, either.
