Ted Williams. I never saw him play in person but I did see him manage. As a child I remember attending a Washington Senators game in D.C. when he was managing the team.

Nah, I don't recall anywhere saying it was reported as his last game.

I do think I recall he told his manager he wasn't travelling to NY for the last road trip.

The spitting incident was early on in his career. He behaved poorly, but writers like Col. Dave Egan created the drama.

This idiot left Ted off his ballot completely for MVP at a time when 1st got 10 points and 10th got 1 point, and Williams lost to Dimaggio by 1 point.

Very neat indeed. Why did Williams dislike the media and fans so much?

Judging by the crowd, baseball is obviously dying.

Nowadays Wrigley or Fenway is packed on a Wednesday afternoon.

Doesn’t mean the people in the stands don’t have jobs.

Maybe the smaller crowds have something to do with this...

Murphy’s film captured each of Williams’s four plate appearances, and also shows the famous closing chapter of Williams’s long-running feud with Boston’s newspaper writers and fans when he refused, in any way, to acknowledge a roaring standing ovation that enveloped Fenway Park after the final home run.
Thank you PBS for picking up this video.

Ted was cocky and confident. His behavior makes Bregman's look bashful.

He was raised by absent parents and his baseball talents essentially shaped him. He was literally a big kid when he came up.

He was accused of not being a team player, concerned only with his accomplishments, the kind of things that all players today can take for granted. The relationship became almost immediately antagonistic.

So much so, that even when all he wanted to do was play baseball, when the press accused him of being a draft dodger, he missed parts of 5 seasons defending his country.

I looked into his stats and found some fascinating information. Imagine what he could have done if he didn’t miss 3 seasons in his prime while in the military. And he hit .388 when he was 38. The year he hit .406 he didn’t have a hitting streak longer than 23 games. But didn’t go more than 7 at bats without a hit. And despite how great he was, he made the playoffs just once and hit .200 in the World Series.

And they lost that Series when Enos Slaughter scored from 1st on a single

The best biography I have found was by Leigh Montville. Pulled no punches

They probably thought he was trying to make a quick buck with some garbage old film. Still lazy not to even take the time to see the footage.

I would like to see that. One thing I miss about not getting MLB Network is the well produced documentaries. I really enjoyed the Ken Burns ones.

The biography by Montville is a book.

I have a collection of VHS tapes I've collected over the years of interviews and specials that aired on TV.

I'm currently working on another biography done by Ben Bradlee Jr. I befriended a guide from Islamadora that took him on many trips late in life when his health was limiting him in exchange for signed memorabilia that he would bring to the National Collector's Convention.

I was able to acquire some unique items.

A one time only bottle of wine that was produced for Opening Ceremonies of the Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame in Citrus Hills, FL

It was called Cooperstown South and later moved to the Tampa Bay Rays stadium.

A signed and framed pic of Ted from his only minor league season. Many other items, but those are two I haven't seen anywhere else.

That really stands out to me.
