I think Boise State's model is the best we could hope for.

We know we are not part of the BCS and we will never be a money-maker for the NCAA. All we want is to be competitive, win conference championships, knock off a few of the LSU-types along the way, and have a lot of fun doing it.
Good, humble answer.

Follow-up question: How does avoiding a true home/home with ULM deviate from such a path? I only see such a natural rivalry as a good thing.

It doesn't. I think there are some big boosters that don't want to see the game played and money talks.

If ULM can ever get its program to the level where it is out-recruiting Tech and out-drawing them in attendance and it becomes beneficial for Tech to play ULM, you will see a few games. Right now, Tech is scheduling regional teams that do beat them out on recruits so they can have some ammunition for recruiting.

ULM outdrew Tech in attendance last year.

My opinion is that it is beneficial for Tech to play ULM. In addition, some people who had a deluded (rather than ambitious) view of Tech think that they are "too good" to play ULM; this will hurt Tech more than it helps it. In fact, it already is doing so; ULM, who has plenty of regional rivals thanks to the Sun Belt, has cancelled series in all sports with Tech, most likely in reaction to Tech's elitist attitude.

ULM to Tech: If you're too good to play us in football, then you're too good to play us in baseball, water-skiing, volleyball, etc...

Ah, yes, I remember those monumental water skiing contests at the State Fair Classic on Caddo Lake. It's a damned shame they're now just a distant memory. Or maybe they're just a psylocibin induced hallucination. Not unlike Tech's football agenda.

Don't forget Tech's next bigtime sport is bass fishing.

I'd like for you to elaborate on capturing that lucrative El Dorado market. Do you literally mean the Arkansas town, which is probably no larger than Ruston? Or is that an allegory of a desired future state? Your quest for the "seven cities of gold" that could bail out a struggling program? LOL!

It's a fact. Just because ULM didn't outdraw Tech in a way that you like doesn't make it untrue.

This is factually correct and in the NCAA's official records: ULM outdrew Tech in football attendance in 2008.

ULM should be a community college and this thread should be anchored

It was. Then it was decided that it would be better as a university. Looks like you're behind on the curve.

That is an example of why the university system in Louisiana is so weak. A middling, mediocre (and that is being extremely generous) school like ULM should never have been bumped up to a 4 year school. The fat needs to be trimmed, and ULM is nothing but fat.

Tech played them every year when they were a community college. This argument sucks.

Tech should play ULM. It would be good for both schools.

What does Tech have to gain by playing ULM or ULL away from Ruston? They meaning Tech, have too much to lose, if they win they are suppossed to, if they lose they will get hammered. It is the same argument used by schools not to schedule teams from non-BCS schools away from home.

Tech has nothing. Tech thinks it has something. Tech is mistaken.

The BCS schools have something to lose. Tech does not.

Amen. LSU beats tech 100 times and it's no big deal. Tech beats LSU by one point one time and it's a story they pass down to their grandchildren.

My personal opinion is that LSU should play no in-state schools, except for Tulane in BR only.

Since that is not the case, I'd like to see us use leverage on the Techs of the world, particulary where they are on the state dole.

Follow our example and play the other schools. Work it out among yourselves, but saying no is no option.
