It's smoke and mirrors. From their own publication (Page 11):

"Louisiana Tech Athletics will raise funds to support an overall budget
of $16.5 million and will meet or exceed the WAC recommended
budget increase.
Objectives & Strategies:
Increase institutional support with an increase in the amount allowable by the State by
$1,500,000 to $4,600,000. $4.6 million (a quarter of their budget) going not to academics, but taxpayer subsidy to keep a 1-AA program artificially in Div. 1.

A permanent rivalry with ULM would do more for Tech than a home/home with Southern Mississippi.

Maybe we're searching for a better rival?
Preferably one that has winning records.

IMO "not even the best engineering school in North Louisiana" and "Tech would get cut before ULM" win this one for the Techies.

Death from within for the ULM fans on this thread I'm afraid. Thanks ulmtiger.

LSU and Tulane. That seemed like a good idea didn't it. Now LSU wants out from under that contract.
The rivalry is the sweetest part of college football; I wish LSU/Tulane was permanent. I'm a traditionalist.

Take off the "Tech is shite" glasses and you can see that Tech's football program is headed in the right direction and ULM's isn't.
I've gotta start tallying these down. If Tech is headed in the right direction, where's the destination? Where exactly are they headed?

Nichols State is willing to take the paycheck for their beating.

ULM dosen't realize that their place in the grand scheme of things is to take the 350K La Tech offered them and take the raping at Joe Aillet.

The arse raping would probably happen in all honesty, but Tech used to lower themselves to come to Monroe, too. Every other year. If you Techies want a comparison, look at Tulane and LSU. Tulane pretty much knows they are going to take a beating, but the few times they do beat LSU it worth it to them.

BUT THEY STILL PLAY A HOME AND HOME. LSU probably doesn't get squat for money when they play at Tulane, but they are willing to go.

So using Tech logic, they are above LSU and can't stoop to playing a home and home with a historical in-state rival?

Not a great comparison imho.

LSU = a
Tulane = b
Tech = c
ULM = d

a - b > c - d

LSU gets 40k seats for the Tulane home games; if ULM and Tech were to play home/home, they'd go normal on it. Tech, being an insignificant school football-wise, does not have enough going for them that they would be able to demand 20k seats for Malone Stadium.

My point is that the series record is pretty much one sided in both cases, but they still play on. No logistics involved.

Already answered in this thread, plenty of schools play FCS schools and one win per year is allowed to count towards bowl eligibility. It is not like Tech is the only one scheduling these types of games.

LaTech and ULM should play each other. It will have good attendance and be good for both programs generating more interest in both programs. Seriously out of LA no one would really care if ULM beat LaTech and vice versa. It would not be seen like a MAC school beating a big ten school or Appy State being Michigan.

All the non-BCS schools in La should be in the same confernce. There should be a Southern version of the MAC. The MAC lives within a big ten footprint and there are schools like Miami, OH and Temple in the MAC.

LA Tech, Tulane, ULM, ULL, Southern Miss, Troy, Memphis, UCF, FAU, USF, Middle Tenn State, UAB should be in a conference together and maybe throw in Rice and Houston and take out UCF and Memphis.

But you can find a combo of schools in SEC country to play each other and you could even sign a deal with the SEC to play games with each other.
