7 starts in 2 years. $70M spent.

Guaranteed contracts worst thing ever in baseball.

Are you personally paying his contract? If not, who cares.

He did put the team on his back to win a WS, so there’s that.

Just a fan sitting here watching 7 year 300M contracts being ridiculously thrown around when they rarely play enough games, much less perform enough to warrant it.

Ticket prices go up. Going to the park goes up. Costs happen to offset.

Yeah, I don’t think the Nationals would complain too much about the 2019 World Series MVP.

So this is what I don’t understand about this sport. You don’t pay for what has happened. You should pay for what will happen. They gave him $280M. He has started 7 games since. That’s not exactly called proportional dividends. Even with a reduced season.

Is the implication they should have been able to predict he would get hurt?

Yes. Right now they are disappointed with how things have gone. But rvery team would have done what they did in 2019

Why would you give a 32 year old a $280M 7 year deal. He was never going to live up to that with his mileage and injury history.

Plus that’s essentially $35 million in dead money in a sport with a pseudo-salary cap that could be used to improve the roster in other ways.

What a weird response..

He’s making a point about how fully guaranteed contracts for that amount of money are crap.

Your numbers are off. Reduced season in 2020 led to reduced salaries. He got like $9 million last year and not $35 million.

I don’t know why you’re railing against guaranteed contracts. It’s not like he’d have been cut in the off-season this year and they would have saved money.

I do, however, agree this is the fault of the team. This is one of those win now moves where you expect to have that crappy baggage in the last half of the contract, but give me 3 elite seasons and its worth it.

He started 2 games. You think that’s better? Equally bad.

Nats fan here. WS MVP, all good. Definitely made of glass though. I don’t think he will come back from this surgery.
