The Stanford Band does many controversial things, but what they did at Notre Dame to get banned went wayyyyyy to far.

Just shows that USC is the only football school out west that actually matters - no matter how bad they are.

Those dudes are always clowning USC. Didn't they do an OJ reference in the Coliseum a couple years ago?

The Notre Dame stuff was tasteless. But they ragged on Joe Francis (a USC alum) in several shows. I think the tree was flashing the USC student section

Tell me more.

I've only lived here for the last 10 years.

Beavers' games too?

The date: October 15,1994

The location: Stanford Stadium

The controversy: The band entered Stanford Stadium in a Ford white Bronco and drove around the stadium's track at a low rate of speed. "Bloody" hand prints were all over the Bronco, in reference to former Trojan OJ Simpson's alleged crime scene.

Stanford still can't forgive OJ for leaving San Francisco for the Southland.

The date: 1994

The location: Los Angeles County Courthouse

The controversy: Around twenty band members skipped rehearsal and instead showed up outside the LA County Courthouse during jury selection for the murder trial of OJ Simpson. The band was disciplined by the school for several things, not withstanding their rendition of The Zombies' "She's Not There."

One of Simpson's attorneys (Robert Shapiro) called the band's behavior "a new low in tasteless behavior."

It's so hard to decide, though. There are so many lows to choose from.

Ah...so this was the Oregon incident.

You couldn't make up a more stereotypical tale of the West Coast if you tried...

Sounds frigging hilarious to me.

Could be why I've adopted the Beavers... they play the chainsaw sound at Reser. Chainsaw noises must give the spotted owl huggers in Eugene chest pains.

quote:

The date: October 27, 1990

The location: Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon

The controversy: The band decided to do a spoof on how logging has affected the Spotted Owl's habitats, this time on the road, away from the somewhat safe confines of Stanford Stadium.

Knowing how nature-loving Oregonians feel about endangered species despite having a huge logging undustry, the band infuriated the entire state by performing in a chainsaw formation, and changing the word "Owl" to "AWOL."

The Governor of Oregon "banned" the band from stepping foot in the state of Oregon, although that later was rescinded.

How embarrassing is it when your governor tries to ban something from entering a state and he has no power to do that?

quote:

In what might be the most infamous marching band performance in history, the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) put on a halftime field show in late 1990 at the University of Oregon's Autzen Stadium, poking fun at the northwestern state's ailing logging industry and its troubles with the endangered northern spotted owl by, amongst other things, suggesting that Oregonians try growing marijuana for a living instead of cutting down trees.

The show, needless to say, didn't go over well with the home crowd. Not well at all. Even Stanford's spirited rendition of Monty Python's "The Lumberjack Song" failed to soothe the bruised sensibilities of angry Ducks fans.

It would be three long years before the Stanford Band would even be allowed back into the State of Oregon, by order of the Governor, and more than a decade would elapse before it was again invited to perform in Eugene

I don't mind the Stanford band. It's something verrrrry different although seems more fitting for something from Berkeley. I can't stand our (Oregon) marching band. The last couple bowl games with the Ohio State, Auburn and Wisconsin bands made us look so pathetic.

Also, fyi, the Stanford band is a student-run organization. VERY different than other university's marching bands.

Satnford's band has always been annoying to me but if they pissed off ND and those smelly nature hippies in Oregon that bad they may just be alright by me.

Exactly. I thought the Notre Dame shite was funny as hell. The Irish Catholics need to be less butt hurt. I hope the reference Corn a lot at the rose bowl or make fun of pellini for being a dick.
