Some sources saying it came from within the scouting department from some guys that were bitter that Luhnow didn't take them but took other scouts to Houston.

Also been confirmed the hacks were done at home, not on the Cards watch or property.

Sounding like the Cards will fire a couple of scouts, lose a few draft picks, and that'll be that.

I don't really understand this:

quote:

Major League Baseball notified the FBI when it became concerned that the network had been the victim of a rogue hacker, according to the Times, and agents discovered that the network had been entered from a computer at a home occupied by some Cardinals officials. They were seeking to “wreak havoc,” according to the Times, on Luhnow’s work.
Washington Post Article

This isn't the first time I've seen this language. Are they saying the Cardinals "officials" all lived together or that they were all having a drinking party one night and one said, "Hey, looky! I got Luhnow's password! Haha!"?

If it's the former... what the frick? What kind of "officials" need roommates? Must be some pretty low level "officials" to be living with roommates.

If it's the latter... What the frick? How the hell does the MLB (or anyone else) know that the account was hacked by more than one guy at a single house? I'm just confused by this.

They were just having a slumber party. Doing each others' nails. Practicing kissing on each other.

You know. The Cardinal Way.

if they used a pw, its not hacking. Intrusion or breach is a better term.

I highly doubt the St Louis Cardinals front office tasked its employees to hack into the Astros files from some mid/low level employees fricking home. I know some people hate them some Cardinals but common sense here folks.

Sure looks like some low level type/types did some dirt on Lunhow out of spite retribution. Leaking stuff to dead spin to embarrass Lunhow sure seems fairly telling as to motivation. Dont think this is going to tie into the Cardinals on a grand scale like some are hopping for though.

Whoever did it is a fool and will be fired and maybe prosecuted. Cardinals will get slap on wrist and told to have tighter reins on their employees actions by MLB. Cardinals will remain one of the great MLB franchises.

It was a couple of mad scouts that Luhnow didn't pick to take with him to Houston. Probably younger and rented a place together.

Seems most likely.

You would hope the Cardinals execs would at least use a VPN.

If the Cardinals were trying to use it to gain a competitive advantage why on earth would they expose that there was a security risk/breach by leaking stuff to the media and not tried to maintain long term access to their system?

There are going to be some disappointed Cardinals haters when this shakes out in the end.

The story is serious click bait.

It's a low level employee who set out to embarrass Luhnow and had the tools to do so. He posted anonymously on a website not thinking about the potential repercussions. He lived in a house with other Cardinals' employees (i.e. entry level type folks renting a house together) and now he is getting busted for doing something moronic. The Astros asked MLB to look into the leak, and MLB got the FBI involved because it was federal jurisdiction.

No one was stealing information. Everyone wants to sensationalize it. It's silly and over the top, and it's pretty odd to see so many people buying it.

My two cents.
