We're so far removed from MJ's hey day that now people forget how dominant he was.

we have his stats and we are comparing his stats

unless you want to claim his dominance didn't show up in the box score

Is the three point game not much more heavily emphasized in today's game? People didn't really shoot them back then close to the volume that we see today. There's a reason for that.

volume is one thing, but the skill is another. bird shot over 40% from 3 from the same era so let's not act like it was impossible

Since MJ, lebron is the only guy to get any sort of legit GOAT talk, and even then the vast majority of posters know he probably won't get there.

I'll concede it's way early to go there with Curry, but he is having a season we've never seen before. It's a huge "if" but if he can sustain this level for a while, he can make his way into the conversation at least.

Well the one thing I already mentioned that seems to be getting ignored is the huge gulf between the two defensively, and most of that wouldn't show up in a box score.

Bump to add some more Steph Curry greatness.

Steph scored 20 points in 13 mins between the 4Q and OT in Saturday's win.

Steph is having a GOAT season, and is in line for GOAT status if he doesn't get hurt....and he is more likable. I am big Steph fan. However, the Effective and true FG % will reward those who shoot more threes. As we all know, the three-point shot is marginally more difficult than a long two. If Jordan played today, there is no reason to believe that he couldn't be a much better three-point shooter than he was (he was AWFUL from three). Back then, he didn't need the three point shot to dominate; no one really emphasized. In today's game, I believe Jordan would have put more effort into his long range game. No, he would never shoot as well as Steph, but there is no reason that he couldn't shoot 38-42 percent from the three.

Younger savvy fans today have greater propensity to call everything they see as "the greatest ever" before the player (fill in the blank) has even finished half of his career, or season.

FIFY

I mean, a month ago, Cam Newton had a skill set that nobody could truly stop, was the new prototype, and every other great slow-footed white QB was garbage, from the past, and used up.. Until Denver shut that convo down for a minute.

1. Only if they make them.

2. And it should be rewarded more.

The rest of what you said is why it's so hard to judge players from different eras, even if MJ's era wasn't that long ago. But the fact that no one is even coming close to doing what Steph is doing is really telling. It's not just the extra emphasis on the 3, it's that he'd shooting more and making more than everyone by a long shot. Pun intended!!!

The sophistication of defensive schemes are soooo much better now. Not to mention with the illegal defense rules as they were back then, today's Curry would go bonkers on defenses 25 years ago.

This stuff is just fricking ridiculous. The "sophistication" of basketball defenses? I can tell that you've recently heard terms used in basketball, and you think they are new... but "hedging", "under-cutting a screen", and whatever different word they use now for "trapping" aren't some new sophistication of the game.

Damn, I can tell which posters listen to a LOT of Espn , and sports talk.

Lol. Boston basically created a new zone defense in 2008. So yes, defenses now are different and more sophisticated. Just like they are in football compared to 20 years ago

Oh my, you poor thing.

Funny you say that as I watch zero ESPN(non live sports) and 1 sports talk show, the one that gets hated on for never ever breaking down games in that manner.

But hey, nice try!!!

NBA defenses of today vs 25 years ago is one of the easier litmus tests to see if someone really lacks in NBA IQ, possibly the best one we can over and over on these boards.

I mean, if you understand the concept of evolution, why would it not be more complex nowadays? It's pretty logical.

No, basketball and football have not introduced any new concepts since 1990.

The current NBA players have played this level of "sophistication" in high school

Somebody explain the "sophistication" that the current player has to deal with compared to the past players. Not just zone versus man. No zone defense is complicated.... Definitely not "sophisticated". None in basketball should ever be called that

Go watch an old NBA classic game, then one from this season. I'd like to see you make these statements with a straight face after that. Just a nostalgic, non-reality point of view you have.

Are you kidding me? Did you not see what GS did in the finals last year when they basically went 100% to a small lineup which allowed them to maximize Draymond greens elite defense? You actually think that happens in 1995?

If you can't watch a game now and see how even in man defense, there are always multiple players positioning as help defenders, and the ridiculous rotations that take place... when compared to a blow by equaling wide open layups back in the day... there's no point in arguing with you. You see what you want to see. Whatever.
