If you told someone in 1996 that Indiana would be the national champion in football and UF is the reigning champion in basketball in 2026, they would think you were crazy.

Right Indiana (even a year removed from making the playoffs) was 100 to 1
Its because of last year

Before last year Indiana would have been 15,000 to 1 but hoenstly I doubt you could even get odds

Plus, as far as this conversation goes, the vast majority of us do not follow European soccer.

Additionally, when it comes to professional sports, there isn’t much that surprises me.

IU’s last bowl win until the Rose Bowl was the Copper Bowl in 1991. Kind of sums it up.

Ole Miss won the 2022 CWS at +6500. 2008 Fresno State would have been way, way longer than that. Probably +10000.

You can’t get 15,000 to 1 odds on New Mexico State to win the natty

These need to be drastically flipped, if Nova even belongs on some list.

They finished 3rd/4th in the Big East when it was far and away the best basketball Conference...And had only lost to #1 Georgetown by 2 points! Two months prior.

I hear ya. I’m just picking nits and actually thinking about it

I do think Indiana won’t be the last example of this in this new era, this would legitimately have been impossible 10 years ago

All American professional sports have rules to ensure parity, so European soccer, national team sports, or other college sports are really the only comparable things to IU’s run.

When cignetti was hired in 2024, Indiana was +29,000 to win the big 10 championship.

700 days later they are national champs

I just threw a quick list together. Villanova is considered by many publications the most unlikely champion is college basketball history.

Like I said, I more consider IU’s championship to be on par with Butler, had that last second heave gone in.

What?

They are a very solid basketball program throughout history

It has to be Leicester and Indiana

NC State had won a previous national title less than a decade earlier. It was unheard of for Leicester and Indiana to win.

More stats

528–719–46 (.426) Indiana’s all-time CFB record.

That’s 127th out of 136 FBS teams. The only power 5 team that is worse is Wake Forest.

What Fresno St did winning the CWS would be comparable to the winner of the Mayonnaise Bowl running through the CFP and winning it all

Frasno is out of the box as well but the way college baseball playoff is setup it doesn’t feel as big of a deal to me

LSU the eventual national title winner last year was 2 innings away from being knocked out by the worst team in the tournament

Look it up.

It’s not on par with Indiana though. I don’t know what basketball program would fit that mold.

As I said, butler is the only one that almost comes to mind.

All of a sudden me turning Duke into a blue blood on the video game doesn't seem so unrealistic now.
