Yeah, you have no idea how taxes work.

Well he pledged $41 million, but the University guarantees them. It’s common for individuals and organizations gives fund to a university and the university sets-up and guarantees its use as agreed.

If it's working that way, why are people now saying that the University is paying for the scholarships?

I voted for Trump and agree. I wish he would shut up and President, so to speak. I really don’t like my sports with a side of politics. I’d prefer those two stay the frick away from each other

You don't understand how any of this works.

The VAST majority of the funding from the Akron Public School system is money they were already spending on these students.

They pulled teachers and students form other schools into the I Promise school. They will eventually pull 25% of the "at-risk" students out of the regular schools. They were spending money on these students anyway. The LeBron James Family Foundation and others are helping covering the extras that the I Promise school provides.

Hell, the building for the school already existed. It was a property they were maintaining and using as a temporary school when necessary.

Don't try. This has been covered multiple times in the other thread and dude is still spouting this.

I cited him to the analysis showing this actually reduces cost before you even add in LeBron's contribution, and it does no good.

That's pretty vague language. Not LeBron's fault. ESPN's fault (or LeBron's publicist).
Here is a story from when it was originally announced:

LeBron James created a foundation that has pledged to give more than 1,100 students full rides to college, which could cost ~ $41 million

In fairness to him, the federal tax code is 75,000 pages. It's not exactly an easily understood issue
But a charitable deduction is not something difficult to understand, and if it is, then a person should probably not make snarky comments about something they don’t understand.

Is it better to side with what the Foundation & University agreed on in a public statement or go with the court of public opinion (aka Twitter) in this situation?

From the article:
quote:

When the third graders reach their senior year, if they've maintained a 3.0 GPA, they'll be offered 4-years of college tuition to the University of Akron, paid for by LJFF.

If this is accurate (I have no reason to think it isn't), then Clay Travis claiming that Akron is paying the scholarships is either inaccurate, or a ridiculous semantics argument.

ETA: Edited to change "is" to "isn't"

Given that it's Clay Travis, I'll go with ridiculous semantics argument.

The story from The Plain Dealer a couple days ago is that the University has GUARANTEED the scholarship, which does not necessarily mean it’s also PAYING for it.

Since the eligible students won’t graduate for a few years, then the details of the spending are not available. Between that and Lebron pledging $41 million, it’s foolish to assume that guarantee is equivalent to spending.

If LeBron only pledged 41 million to my school when I expected 160 million I'd be furious

This is twitter stunt by CT for retweets and likes on his page. He knows the vast majority of his following isn't going to deep dive into the details of this arrangement.

Most importantly, they learned that in conjunction with the Foundation and its partners, The University of Akron would provide Foundation students (who meet a certain set of requirements and graduate from Akron Public Schools) with a tuition and fees scholarship to The University of Akron.

So his foundation IS paying for the scholarships and has been for years already

Was it not represented as Lebron promising to give all the graduates scholarships to Akron?

It was, but not by LeBron or his foundation. He has a foundation. The foundation started the I Promise program. The foundation partnered with JPMorgan and U of Akron to guarantee scholarships to kids who completed the I Promise program.

That's the kind of program that only happens for a guy with LeBron's clout.

so a new facility, new bussing, etc. ABOVE the regular school system has no added cost?
