So..... The transfer portal and NIL have actually created parity in the sport?

Yeah yeah, I wish we could go back too. But, nothing like yesterday was really possible when all the talent was consolidated on 5-10 rosters.
Maybe it's not so bad?

It has also created a worse product. Games are sloppier, players are more or less fundamentally unsound, and the quality of QB play is absolutely atrocious week in and week out.

There's a ton I don't like about the current CFB landscape.
There's also some fun aspects as well.
As much as I think the regular season has been neutered, yesterday was a fun day of CFB, and the games were still intense even though nobody was really eliminated.
The 24 game playoff likely waters it down even more but I'll admit that so far the regular season still has cachet.

The quality of play in college football is much worse for sure. I hate that it’s bleeding over into the NFL.
Between less developed college players, reduced practicing and entitled millionaire kids, I foresee the quality of football tanking over the next 5-10 years.

Completely agree

Regardless if the product, these young MEN, not kids, deserve to be paid. They make plenty of millionaires it's about time they make themselves millionaires as well

Makes one wonder if player movement and getting paid are watering down the product, why do these coaches make 12-13 mil a year and assistants pushing a mil? Isn't it their jobs to coach the sloppy play out? Yet no one wants to blame them for the product they ultimately are responsible for. Hence, player movement and getting paid. They catch all the blame why not reap some of the reward the coaches have been getting forever? Maybe, just maybe, the coaching has gotten worse.

Teams, even the good teams, lack depth.
Less continuity year to year so you’ll see big swings in team performance in September vs. November.
These games aren’t really as big of upsets as they seem, we just think that because of the make believe rankings.

The benefit of NIL is that there is definitely more parity. I don’t hate NIL like a lot of people on this board. I do hate the idea of a 24 team playoff though

Of course it’s not bad. This board is just full of bitches.

24 team playoff is fantastic. It gives programs an opportunity to make it that usually do not, and the top teams a bye plus a warm up game before the quarters. I suspect the championship game will be a battle.

Seems like coaching will be more and more important

Yep..It's not the players fault that the system can't simultaneously pay them what they're worth and also have an ideal product. I would agree in a totally ideal world they would just be paid their scholarships, but it does not make sense for the industry to be making countless billions and the people who are the product not be compensated

It’s doing to college football what “One and Done” did to college basketball. You get one year to assemble an All-Star team. Calipari had a new team of five stars every year. Sometimes they meshed well and sometimes they didn’t. Coaches at top programs didn’t know.what they had until midway through the season. Roster wasn’t built over time so you didn’t really know strengths, weaknesses, how they fit together or how they fit within your system. Coaches also had to be smarter and more flexible to adapt to personnel. These five star teams were sometimes terrible to start the season but became juggernauts. Because of conference tournaments and a 64 team March Madness, losing a handful of games early in the season didn’t matter. I think that’s where the 24 team playoff starts to make more sense. You might be one of the best teams in the country in November after dropping games early in the season. It also takes some of the poll nonsense and bias out of the equation. Line em all up in the playoffs. But it’s going to be weird when the second loss isn’t a big deal and a four loss team is hoisting the trophy.

I hate parity. It just means everyone is equally mediocre. I want to see excellent teams and true underdogs trying to take them out. And true battles of goliaths.
Is boring when everyone can beat everyone any given day because they’re all equally average.
I used to like when upsets meant something. Now, with the portal, it just means highly-ranked former SEC 2nd string players who transferred somewhere else “upset” current starters.

Teams go through cycles. Florida State & Tennessee were the top teams in the late 90s, then it was Oklahoma, Miami, Ohio State, LSU and USC. After that it was Florida the alabama, Then Clemson was the big team, then UGA, and now the Big10 Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana.
There’s a difference between parity and mediocrity. alabama is the exception of a team being good for so long. Everyone else has ups and downs.

The best QB in the country is either in Corvallis or Stillwater, and I love that
