This is something that surprises me honestly. How has there not been a transcendent level American soccer player yet that plays within the MLS.

In America, everyone, including non-sports fans, know who guys like Tom Brady, Lebron James, or Derek Jeter (I know he is retired).

There is not one MLS player whom I believe the average American would know. That has to change in order for the league's popularity to grow.

It can't really change UNTIL the league's popularity grows.

But if you think the average American knows anything at all about the USMNT, then they know one of Bradley, Howard, Dempsey, or Altidore.

And if the average American doesn't know who Rooney or Zlatan are, then they wouldn't know an MLS player short of the league signing Messi or Ronaldo.

GOATnaldo won more than 5 titles in the last 18 months. Winning the Champions league 3 consecutive years is an undefinably more impressive accomplishment than making it out the Eastern Conference.

Also to the guy saying Lebron is 1/500 and tGOAT is 1/2500 .

There are 5 "NBA" level leagues in soccer, so for Ronaldo to be the best player in the world, he is the best in 5 leagues that you could argue are all the best. The NBA is one league, and the drop off after the NBA is huge

Lebron is literally the best NBA player on the planet. With that, I just don't get the relevance of what you're saying.

Meaning, it doesn't matter if the NBA had 1 NBA level league or 1000, Lebron would be the best player in any league he was in, so I don't get how the different leagues and what not soccer has is a plus for Ronaldo.

How? Lebron plays in the 1 league that has all of the best players in it, how is there more competition when the best players are spread over multiple leagues? Also, unless I misunderstood what he was saying about 5 leagues, Ronaldo can only play in 1 of those leagues at a time, right? So, the comparison using the soccer format/leagues, for many reasons, just doesn't hold water IMO.

Also, is there some magical hypothetical you can create where there would be a league that plays basketball that Lebron would not be the best player in?

Soccer has tournaments during the league as well. So while hes playing in his countries league hes also playing in a tournament that has all the top 3 teams from all the other leagues around europe

All sports contracts are out of control, and completely stupid.

With that said, capitalism. I'm jealous. All the money and little work.

All true, but none of that really disproves my stance on the competition IMO.

He has to play in Champions League on top of his domestic league. This year in Champions League, he had to play the 3rd best English team, 4th best German team, and the best team from Cyprus in the group stage. In the round of 16, he played the best French team. In the quarters, he played the best Italian team. In the semis, he played the best German team. In the final, he played the 4th best English team.

Ronaldo while playing at Real was playing arguably the toughest league in the world while playing against the best teams in all of europe at the same time. If that doesnt make sense to you how he was playing against tougher competition i dont really know how to explain it to you any easier

So how is that more competitive than Lebron playing the best players and the best team in the world every single year?

If all of the best players in the world are spread across 5 leagues, then by default, those 5 leagues individually can't possibly be as good as the NBA from a competition standpoint.

I'm not even saying it's a notch for Lebron, i'm simply saying by dividing all the best players into 5 leagues, I don't see how you can then argue Ronaldo faces tougher competition.

But what I meant by competition, is that to be #1, he has to be better than so many more players.

For 15 years, Lebron has played in the toughest league in the world, no arguably about it. How's that advantage Ronaldo?

As I said, NBA players play the best players/teams in the world every single season, so I don't get the point here.

That does not make sense, no, based on my responses above.

It would be like if Lebron played in the NBA and had to play against the best teams in europe at the same time except the difference in level of play between the NBA and other basketball leagues is laughable.

How many people play basketball compared to how many play soccer?
