Why were the Spurs allowed to put Duncan in during the clock stoppage to review Allen's 3? If it was not a Spur's time out(they didn't have any left) then it was an illegal substitution.

I was a little confused as well when this was going on. It also seemed like Pop was pissed that they stopped for the review

I think it's treated as a normal stoppage in play and they are allowed to substitute. But the spurs were happy to just go. Refs were horrible at the end on both sides so who knows.

he wanted to take advantage of the chaos on the court and just dribble in for a layup.

they should have disallowed that last play and make them replay those 5.2 seconds of play.

I think Pops was pissed because the stoppage allowed Miami to set their defense... Parker was ready to push hard during those final seconds, and with Miami half celebrating he may have gotten a good look

Watching the replay, it looks like Parker was expecting play to be stopped. He was in no way ready to push.

I scanned the rule book in the Substitutions and Instant Replay sections and can't see an explanation for this

Pretty sure you can substitute during any stoppage

Refs screwed the pooch again I would guess. They were awful last night. Heat should have won by double digits.

"Pretty sure you can substitute during any stoppage"

False. Reviews are not a dead ball stoppage.

Maybe, but I don't see it in the rule book. But I got a headache reading those 2 sections.

j. No substitutes may enter the game after a successful field goal by either team, unless
the ball is dead due to a personal foul, technical foul, timeout, infection control or violation.
k. No substitutes are allowed to enter the game during an official’s suspension-of-play
for (1) a delay-of-game warning, (2) retrieving an errant ball, (3) an inadvertent whistle or
(4) any other unusual circumstance.

It's against the rules. Quite a few tweets proposing the hypothetical "what if Duncan scored the game winner on an illegal substitution?"

Well the ref blowing his whistle makes it a dead ball stoppage.
