Nobody, but it seems all other NBA teams stuck in perpetual .500 hell rotate the door on retread coaches. I’m surprised he lasted that long there and that they wanted him back.

So. 5 of 6 seasons under .500 doesn't get you the option to return for year 7 anywhere in the NBA. Hardy has done it for 4 in Utah, we'll see if he can get to 7.

UNC panicked didn't they

They didn't "panic", but their hand was forced by the NCAA calendar.

The basketball transfer portal opened the day after the final and closes today. If Billy had announced he was leaving before the playoffs started, then I think he'd be in Chapel Hill. Lots of the Rams Club donors I know and attended Carolina with wanted him and were prepared to commit serious $$ to the program.

Management gutted the roster so badly mid season that even he couldn’t make the Bulls competitive. Seems like they are suddenly all in on tanking.

So you throw one season away for a hall of fame college coach. It's not like UNC's fanbase will give up on basketball if they go 14-18 next season.

This. You aren't hiring a coach just for next season.

Hardy may pull it off simply because Ainge has wanted to tank since sending out Gobert and Mitchell.

It depends on what he does once Ainge gets the talent he wants on the roster.

Let's not forget that it wasn't a definite yes that Billy was taking the job. Was he the perceived favorite? Absolutely. Do I think he would have accepted if offered? Also yes.

Remember, the Bulls front office firings hadn't happened either when Malone was hired.

Right, as far as I’m aware, Donovan hasn’t said anything about going back to college.

Is he even interested in any college job?

He may be more focused on an NBA job this summer or taking time off and finding the best job that opens up in the next year.

There’s a solid chance we’ll be open after this season and possibly Kansas (with Self’s health). And of course UF could lose Golden to the Warriors even before that. He’s likely going to have plenty of opportunities if he wanted to.

We had a solid shot at him when Cal left but Barnhart is a dumbass and didn’t want to wait the extra week or so for his season to be over.

I think either this is true, or he is the same as Jay Wright and wants to step away for good. Ie either he’s back after 1 year off or he’s absolutely done.

These high pressure roles do eventually make people pure psychopaths like Pitino or they finally hit their physical, emotional, and psychological/spiritual limits.

I obviously don’t know Coach Donovan. But I think the odds go down drastically every year he’s out.

There’s not a lot of jobs that open up in the Pros or college where you have a legit title shot in 2-3 years, even with NIL. Sure basketball you could win it all year one with NIL, but it’s not likely.

With top college jobs paying as well as they do, I’d think most 60 year olds would prefer to go somewhere they have a championship chance.
