To me this game epitomizes why he isn't a top tier coach. Awful clock management, stubbornness (e.g. insisting on getting to Kamara outside when it didn't work at all), foolish arrogance (going for two in the 1st quarter against a good team), inexplicable risks (fake punt on 4th and 18), etc.

He's a very good coach, but he's only been to the NFC title game three times in 13 years despite having a top 5 all time QB. I love the guy, but his teams don't have consistency bc of his own decision making and personality.

The 2pt plays were just baffling. Doesnt show much confidence in your team when hes going for gimmicks like that

Brees first four drives: perfect QB rating 4 TDs

Shanahan executes successful trick play for 49ers TD on next SF drive.

Next Saints drive: Payton pulls Brees on 1st and 3rd down in SF territory and Saints stopped on two horrible gimmick plays

That summarizes Payton so well. Dude is a fricking clown. Ruined all Saints momentum trying to look smarter than Shanahan.

So basically the NFC version of Andy Reid?

Gets too cute all the fricking time. Hammer it inside with Murray and Hill? No thanks, we'll try to go wide on Boss and co.!

If he didn't have confidence in his team, then he wouldn't have gone for the two points.

I don't mind the two point tries. Be aggressive. Had you made them, the outcome of the game is likely very different.

The defense was arse most of the game (let's remember Klein and Alonso were out), but Payton put the team in a hole with his decisions like going for 2 in the 1st quarter, mismanaging the clock at the end of the 1st half and giving the 49ers a short field after a fake punt on 4th and fricking 18. This loss is overwhelmingly on him

The decision to go for 2 was fine. His playcall was terrible

Yes and my point about him ruining a 5th consecutive scoring drive by pulling Brees bc he just had to one-up Shanahan

If the Saints want to get rid of him, he already has a house in Dallas....

He decided to do that because of the penalty

Strongly disagree. You can't risk chasing points when you're playing a good team and you're down two LBs. Play the percentages. If they were playing the Falcons or something, go for two

90% of the calls today were A+. He is one of the GOATs.

5% were outside runs that should never have been called with how dominant the DEs were.

5% he flinched when he didn't need to. That 4th and 18 fake with how good the defense looked to open the second half was lunacy.

A fake punt on 4th and 18 in a tight game like that was beyond awful, as was management at the end of the 1st half. Payton is like Andy Reid I suppose in that he's an offensive genius but fails at game management on a regular basis
