Did anybody actually think Scheyer was a good hire? He’s going to bring them down a lot in the next 2 or 3 years. And if Duke doesn’t get their next hire right they’ll turn into a mediocre program playing in one of the worst arenas in the country. It’s going to be great seeing them turn into Tulane.
Tulane isn't even a basketball school. Bad comparison. They'll turn into a middling Big East school in strength - they'll still dance 5 times every 10 years.

Seems Hiring “one of us” rarely works out. Particularly at a major program.

That doesn’t matter. Some of the best coaches out there were average to below average players.

NIL won’t let Duke fall off talent-wise.

A couple of points relevant to this thread:
*Hubert Davis was one bad half away from winning a NC in his first season.
*He defeated the mighty Devils twice (FF and last game in Cameron for K) ending K's career. A Duke team with 5 NBA draft picks (imagine what K could do with a little talent?).
*Duke is too well established as a program to falter regardless of whether Scheyer succeeds or not.
*Jury is still out on Scheyer. This group may not succeed but he's brining in a whole new class of 5*s next season.

He was also 16-7 and in danger of missing the tournament completely last year.
This year he returned 4/5 starters from that almost championship team and has them unranked halfway through the season.
And again, North Carolina’s biggest problem is their talent level compared to other top programs, something he’s been in charge of for several years. The most baffling part is they are very much of “program guy” team now and rarely have one and dones, but they have absolutely no depth for the 2nd straight year. Starting 5 all play 30+ minutes.

To me it’s 50-50 whether K just wanted a puppet or for his replacement to face plant.

Their record isn't bad at all as you say and they have a few good wins but the 'best freshmen" have been busts. Lively has to be one of the biggest talent evaluation misses in recent time. Jeremy Roach has been absolutely awful this season so they are playing without a point guard. Their best player is a husky white grad transfer from Northwestern.

Duke is running a tough game where most of their one and done players have to be really good.
Under K, this was generally the case and you had guys that came in and even exceeded expectations. People like Tatum, Zion, Bagley, Ingram, Banchero, Luke Kenner’s, and the Jones brothers exceeded their hype.
RJ Barrett, Vernon Carey, Cassius Stanley, Mathew Hurt, Mark Williams, Wendell Carter, and Gary Trent Jr were all as good as their rankings indicated.
Sure there were some flops like Marques Bolden, Trevon Duval, Deryck Thornton, Chase Jeter, and Harry Giles (due to injury) but they were surrounded by great players and at least one legit NBA all star. Despite being picked high, I would put Cam Reddish there as well.
In this year’s class, Tyrese Proctor is in the flop group. Dariq Whitehead is in the flop group for now and will be at best a Keels/Reddish type of guy. Lively is arguably the biggest recruiting miss by the sites in a decade, especially if we only count players without off-court issues.
This makes the miss even worse because he seems to be a perfectly fine kid who is absolutely not a top 3 national prospect. He doesn’t look like a top 100 guy.
Some of this is on Scheyer but I think the same thing would have happen under any coach in his shoes. There were colossal misevaluations and all of scouts, all of the recruiting “gurus”, and all of the top programs wanted these guys who just aren’t good (Whitehead may be serviceable).
K is obviously a great coach but he almost never missed in the one and done era. Cal had bad classes. Self has huge misses including Cliff Alexander and Josh Selby in one year. Scheyer had that in his first year with no track record to speak of.
Next year will be huge for him. I find it hard to believe he will whiff so badly back-to-back.

It’s not just the freshmen. Grandison provides next to nothing out there and Roach, who was supposed to take a big step forward and star, is the single worst offender. Between roach, proctor, and grandison, it’s a terrible backcourt relative to high level acc play. There’s enough front court talent to help you beat slower big ten offenses but there’s a reason they got cooked by NC State. They just aren’t that good. 2-3 playmakers max. The fact that they almost beat Kansas is remarkable.

Yeah, seriously. Talk about an overreaction. If Dook stinks in March I’ll consider this more.

Hubert Davis returned 4 starters from a team that was one bad half away from winning a NC and failed to make the tournament with them.
First preseason #1 team to miss the tournament altogether
