It goes to show how utterly ridiculous ESPN's short lived narrative of "could the NBA replace the NFL as America's most popular sport" was. It is not even as popular as college football. It is neck and neck with MLB for 3rd place.

eh. Finals ratings have historically been pretty comparable to national championship and CFP ratings

Absolutely not. For comparison's sake, 33 million people tuned in to watch Game Six of the 1998 NBA Finals (Jordan's last game with the Bulls). These are historically low ratings that have never been seen before.

You don’t even have to compare to that year
Last year 18.34M people watched game 6
It is a VERY big decline from the year before

It was also just about the only game on TV Saturday night.

And it was the first big matchup of the year, #2 vs. #3 - and people have been starved for some CFB games that involved ranked teams.

The World Series schedule used to be Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday so if the World Series went to seven games, there would be two Sunday World Series games with Game 7 being on a Sunday night. Case in point, Game 7 of the 2001 World Series was aired on a Sunday night and got 39 million viewers.

Agreed. Just compare it to games this decade or the last 5 years even.

Last 5 years the finals averaged 18.66 million viewers
This year 7.45m

And last years ratings were down as well largely because we don't count Toronto in our ratings

You do realize discussing facts that point to the opposite of what posters have argued in the past isn’t melting but rather, wait for it, discussing a topic?

The NBA finals being aired in October instead of June has to be the definitive cause for that type of drop in ratings. Yeah, I’m sure lots of people were turned off by the NBA becoming very political but that wouldn’t have caused a 67% drop in ratings.

discussion of a topic on something you don't care about means you have a mental illness esp when you do it over and over and over

This can’t be overlooked. As soon as football started, like at all, NBA rating dropped. It’s because this country lives football first and foremost. Basketball is watched simply because it’s on and is the only thing on for a lot of folks.

What makes you think this is a hobby of mine. It’s a topic that interests me so I pay attention to when it’s brought up on this board, but it’s not a hobby.

You’re awfully defensive about the NBA ratings tanking and not being as popular as a regular season college football game.

Yes, I was just talking about the old format with a buddy, and referenced that very game.

I wouldn't mind it going back to that.

ETA: if I remember right, that Game 7 went up against the Jets/Saints sunday night football game. It was the game Kyle Turley ripped off an opponent's helmet and threw it across the field.

Obviously, the MLB's nightmare scenario is having a Game 7 go up against a Chiefs/Packers Sunday night game. As NFL has taken over in popularity, MLB has had to adjust.
