Nah, the diaphragm is innervated by C3, 4 and 5. GENERALLY speaking, a spinal cord injury needs to be at C4 or higher to be truly life threatening though a C5 injury can cause moderate difficulty breathing.

And unfortunately, when you use "spinal shock" outside of a neurology setting many healthcare workers (even some doctors) incorrectly hear "neurogenic shock" which is completely different.

How long would it be until they would know? I couldn't imagine what he's going through right now.

Probably the only thing we can take away from the injury at this point

He'll need further evaluation and testing to confirm the damage

Game is hard to watch after seeing Shazier go down. Just have a sick feeling in my stomach for the guy. Never want to see it happen to anyone but the kid seems like, not just a great player but, a really good human being as well.

And spinal shock isn't necessarily a "good" thing. Relative to the alternatives sure, but he'd possibly still never play again depending on the severity of the inciting injury. Spinal shock just exacerbates the acute phase but he could have chronic debility once it resolves.

I did a month of trauma surgery and a month of neurosurgery way back in med school, saw way more awful spinal injuries than I ever wanted to. Watching a C4 transection awkwardly gasp for air is one of the worst things to see.

Depends. Any sort of lesion or structural damage to the spinal cord, let alone the vertebrae, can manifest in various clinical presentations. Usually x-ray or MRI can give an indication which they would find out within the hour (or so) of showing up to the hospital

C3, C4, and C5 keep the diaphragm alive.

Good mnemonic for those of the OT interested in medical trivia

Many more games like this on prime time and NFL will be dead.

No one will let their kids play.

Thoughts already racing through my head. Have on that will be playing in 10th grade and my youngest completely blew out his ACL in 5th grade a year ago.

It’s been almost an hour and there are still no updates. That can’t be a good sign... When dealing with a back/neck injury isn’t news about full mobility one of the quickest updates?

MRI should be first test they do

MRI on full body takes much longer to do just to get the images.
