glad the cubs didn't budge from 4 years (or so I'm guessing to go from front runners to signed with the jays in a day).

Yeah I had speculated that he was a great fit in y'all's thread but this is a lot of money. Jays going all in on the down AL East

Eh, he got paid and went back home to Toronto,Canada

Club will make some cash off of him being a local Canuck, and he can become a face for org to the locals.

Overpaid, but understandable from both perspectives.

If you're assuming a light hitting dh is what the jays are ok with in years 4 and 5 then sure. I doubt a couple extra shirseys makes up for that though.

Now if we just call this the nature of the market, then yea, it was expected that one team would vastly over pay.

Way too much for a career .250 hitter

I think it probably is a slight overpay, but judging Russell Martin's value solely on his batting average would be like saying Chris Paul is overpaid because of his number of blocked shots per game.

Wow, is he even a top 7 catcher anymore?

Yes

Lucroy, Posey and Molina are the only ones I would definitely take over him.

I get that he is a decent defensive catcher but he will only get worse as he gets older defensively. He also doesn't hit for power.

He is a great defensive catcher and he gets on base. I agree the last two years of this deal will likely be a disaster. Toronto better hope he provides surplus value in the early years especially while Bautista and Encarnicion are still beasts.

He's been better than decent the last couple years and I think Posey Lucroy Mesoraco and Gomes were the only everyday catchers with higher SLG% than him last year. Still the length of the contract at that money is what would concern me

I think Toronto is trying to strike while the iron is hot in the AL east though

It is not a terrible signing for the Jays when you consider that Bautista and Encarnacion are already in their 30's. They were looking at a three year window anyway. It is win now.

It's the best time to do it. Yankees are gonna be about the same as last year I think and the O's are due to fall back a bit. Red Sox should be much better but the Rays will be bad. Now is the time to spend money to push things over the top

oof...glad the blue jays made it a sweeter deal. Would've lost by winning if not.
