Rumors over the weekend were that Cubs were the front-runners at 4 yrs $65M.

This morning both Gammons and Rosenthal reporting Toronto is making a huge push.

Last tweet by Gammons sounds like it's done.

sounds done.

Good for the cubs. 5 years is absurd for him.

yea. being reported by a good bit of people now.

That's a big time contract; kind of glad the Cubs avoided it and Martin is off the market before all the pitchers.

I hope the cubs get out of the bidding if this is truly what his contract is going to look like. I was never that high on him to begin with. We can hide a light hitting defensive catcher in our lineup with the young bats we have coming up. We need to be spending that money on starting pitching.

Wonder if Toronto thinks they are signing him to 85 million canadian dollars.

What's the next logical choice? Stay with Castillo? Or is there another free agent or trade candidate?

well the only concern is if those starting pitchers want to throw to beef considering how bad his pitch framing metrics are (if you buy into that stuff). We'll know soon enough if you start hearing miguel montero rumors again.

Stay with Castillo. Sign a backup defensive catcher that hits left handed not named John Baker.

5yrs/82M is absolutely insane. Look at his offensive career avg. It's very similar to Wellington Castillo, except Castillo strikes out more. Are you going to tell me "pitch framing" is worth 82million? Baseball needs to do something about these contracts. They just keep getting worse.

Tough morning Marle. Lose out on Martin and Cards improve.

Guessing we stick with Castillo. If he was a FA this year, he'd be the 2nd best option out there.

Maybe we can get one via trade. Last year names like Montero, Grandel, Carlos Ruiz, and Rosario were being dangled.

Glad the Cubs did not get his service. That is a lot of dough.

Sucks that Heyward went to STL. He will probably go 30/30 now and finish top 3 in the MVP race.

Yes if it means they put more improvements into the game and fan experience. Baseball is backwards. Pay the guys more early in their careers. The system is messed up. Why pay for past achievements. #Klinsmaning

Heyward is going to own the Central. I can't think of any left-handed pitching in the division.

Makes Lester more valuable to the Cubbies (i'm probably reading too much into it).

Yeah, I'm glad the Cubs missed if that was the price. The Cubs should have enough offense to put a defensive specialist behind the plate and be good to go.
