i would think documentaiton of a previous race would ahve to be provided to compete in the elite group...possibly a sub 3:00 marathon, which she had never done

I checked the website and to register under the elite group you have to send in a running resume for them to review.

it's a race, not a time trial

so if someone gets a 20 minute head start, you still have to cross the finish line ahead of them

fricked up, I know, but it seems like those were the rules

Similar thing happened at the Chicago Marathon last week. The guy ran the 4th fastest time and so normally would get prize money was denied because he didn't start with the elite group.

quote:

The four place finisher in the men’s race was listed as Wesley Korir with bib number 248. Problem was that Korir started five minutes behind the rest of the elite field in the citizen’s race. Through the “magic” of chip timing—the small transponder runners wear on their shoes—runners in road races can have two or more times recorded in a major road race like Chicago.

I don't have a problem with this. Running with the Big Dogs is completely different than running your own pace in the citizens race. The elite runners surge and change pace quite a bit which wears down the average good runner. And if the elite runners know you are there, they will adjust their tactics to try and beat you. If you are hiding in the citizens race then you are a wimp.

Some people are saying it is her fault for her not signing up in the Elite group. Yet, if this ruling is the precedent being set, you are going to have countless other people now sign up for the Elite group just so they have a shot at winning. This will make the Elite group irrelevant with this influx of new "Elite" runners.

She got hosed.

you can't just sign up for an elite group

you need to be able to provide evidence/proof you are indeed elite

No, you just don't get into the elite group you have to submit previous race times. So it won't make the elite group irrelevant.

for most marathons (and lost of 10k's) evidence is not only required for elite status, but also for starting positions throughout the race

i have to show proof that i can run a marathon in under 4:30 from previous 10k's the in the last few years to attain my starting position in my next marathon

did she chug a 40, run barefoot, and smoke cigarettes while running? if not, it's not very impressive.

Shame it took this, but it looks like Nike did the right thing, or at least made up for the original screw-up a little bit.
