What killed the Expos more than anything else was the exchange rate
Taking in Canadian loonies and paying in American dollars
This was the time when it was .70 on the dollar I am not sure now but it is closer to equal than it was in the 70's and 80's

The strike and then Loria were the final bullets, but attendance was never above 10th in the league I think . The city wouldn't give them a new stadium in 2000 too. D.C. was desperate for a team and gave them a beautiful park in the navy yard and have been committed to making the immediate area outside the park a place people want to go, something they didn't have in Montreal.

Really? Phoenix and Houston aren't larger? Not that either should get another team.

Could Salt Lake City, New Orleans or Portland ever support a team?

NOLA definitely not. Nor Portland IMO. I don't know enough about SLC.

Raleigh-Durham might actually make the most sense. That area is huge now, no other team in the area, they've proven they can support the Hurricanes, and they already love baseball / the Bulls. I'd look there.

Not true

There were years when they were above the league average

Actually MLB network has a very good documentary about the Expos
I believe you could find it on YouTube
Triumph and Tragedy
Mainly about the 94 team

This is bs.

Yes the A's have been trying to get out for as long as the Raiders and would have already if the Giants didn't block the SJ move, but I have never heard Vegas as an option for the A's even once and it makes little sense.

The A's have no leverage now, and as a result Oakland will probably try to hold them hostage for another decade like the Raiders.

You can be 10th in attendence but still above average. So yes, true.

I'll donate to the A's move anywhere outside of Oakland fund. As an Astros fan, playing the A's there is pretty much dreadful all around.

~games start at 9 pm central
~the stadium is about as aesthetically pleasing as a baboons arse.
~their fans beat drums and blow vuvuzelas for 3 hours.

On a serious note, now that the football team is gone they could tear down Mt. Davis and renovate the place to be basbeall specific and they might have something.

But please..please...do away with the 6 miles of foul territory.

They were actually 3rd and 4th for a lot of the late 70's early 80's

So yes what you said is untrue

These are not alternative facts either from the Trump administration

There are already fewer West Coast teams, so if Raleigh or Montreal ever get a team it would probably be the Rays. Athletics have been in Oakland so long I would hate to see them leave.

It's not structurally sound enough for any kind of demolition or renovation, the City has already looked into that option years back and were told it cannot handle a renovation or any kind of partial tear down...it has to be completely demolished and rebuilt.

The fans in the right field stands at the Coliseum are some of the best in the country

There may be only 9000 people there but they make themselves noticed

When the A's are good they will fill the seats. At the end of the 2012 season they were putting 35000 in there every day. Could have put more but the upper deck was not opened and covered with tarps

I think the problems with their stadium go well beyond aesthetics. I seems like every year they have some kind of infrastructure issue.

Fair enough, but look at 88-04. That's pathetic.

I saw that Expos film a few years ago. Gammons said if there was no strike in 1994 the Expos would have gotten a new stadium in downtown Montreal.

That was because of getting rid of Andre Dawson

The exchange rate killed Montreal
Montreal is not Toronto they demanded a winner and because of the financial restraints bringing a currency less valuable than you pay will make anyone go into debt

Plus the Blue Jays forced the Expos to stop broadcasting games across the country and they became provincial with only Quebec

The Blue Jays themselves had financial problems until about 2005 when the exchange rate was about even

Shame. If Angel stadium could go from this

To this

I'd like to see what a massive renovation could turn the coliseum into as a baseball only facility.
