what is trump supposed to do about that? how many seconds of audio and 140 character tweets has he dedicated to the NFL?

NBC, CBS and FOX are network channels...they're free. that's such a preposterous explanation. I don't know one cord cutter without an HD satellite, not to mention HULU with live tv, amazon streaming NBC and CBS games this year.

You're talking to one now.
quote:

why is that? tell me why that is?

Commonly-cited reasons: too many flags, can't hit anyone, can't touch the QB. ETA: Let's throw too many commercials under this section, too.
quote:

the catalyst IMO. mounting problems and then this made it easier for people to turn it off or change the channel

It's part of it. What degree is in dispute.
quote:

do shitty matchups and blowouts not predate 2016? certainly a factor but only when compounded with other things

They do. But with so much other shite to watch,
they avoid bad matchups and blowouts. Looks at SEC on CBS this year. IIRC, it's down like 40% from last year.
East explanation is that the games have sucked,
so people are watching something else.
quote:

explain or is this just "cord cutting" repackaged?

IMO, with the popularity of netflix, amazon prime, hulu, MLB.tv, NBA stream, etc etc, people don't sit down in front of their TV and "just put the game on." They are more selective with what they watch. People are changing their habits with the explosion of good television and the ease of access to those shows.

I think I got everything.

Pointing to any one factor that saying "that's why!" is silly
yeah, things are nuanced, pointing to one thing as a catalyst is not silly

"the straw that broke the camel's back" is a commonly used colloquial phrase because it describes something that happens in real life.

It's funny that you hate sports
i say i hate sports but that's just the more intense version of they're becoming less interesting. i watch Tulane every week that i can. pro sports is becoming too corporate and sterile. the nfl has a lore and history that's fascinating. it has traditions and an attachment that is unique. as does baseball and other sports...but that luster is gone. so i don't hate sports, but actually would like very much for them to not suck anymore.

all things I've said for years has created a watered down product that will lead to a decrease in popularity.

who would dismiss such wisdom? hmmmm, i wonder who it could be

In actuality it was going away. It was almost an after thought. That is, until Trump opened his mouth. And everyone from both sides became outraged.

You could be right. I think turning off something you enjoy because some jackoffs kneel for the anthem is silly, hence my consistent mockery. But that's just me. It's easy to avoid that shite. The only weekend it bled over into the actual broadcast was when Trump got involved and forced everyone to response.

I think that's just part of getting older. Your interests change. I used to enjoy basketball. Can't stand it now. It's not anything the NBA did, it just doesn't grab my attention anymore. Same for college football. I used to love it but it's so damn boring to me now. I used to hate MLB but I've watched more baseball this season that I have the last few years combined. I've gone from loving MMA to watching here and there. I've gone from not giving a frick about kickboxing to watching every card.

You get older, your interests change.

Not me.

I still love it, because it's the best version of football available.

ETA: I understand what they're doing with trying to restrict the big hits. It's a fine line. They want to protect their assets while still providing a violent sport. And CTE is scaring the shite out of everyone. It's frustrating sometimes because the defense is so restricted to a receiver, but it's not a big enough deal for me to stop watching.

they can decide when they watch what they want to watch and eliminate the stuff they don't watch. they still watch what they like and they're less likely to watch something NEW unless heavily promoted or unless it gets huge word of mouth. it makes it harder for new network shows like "the excorcist" but for established products (especially the NFL)

interest is declining because

-oversaturation

-shitty product

-a negative perception of the players that is a direct result of the player conduct policy

-an emphasis on things that aren't the actual product like YOUNAMEITgate, "Washington football" and other social activism from the broadcasters and media that present and cover the product

the kneeling is just a match to dry wood and trump is fanning it

the brand perception of the NFL is terrible right now and it's because of the owners and their pet who for some reason they listen to. you say he's just a figure head, but here he was counseling them with a few other owners...counseling them poorly

NFL Game Pass Europe. Every game at the tip of my fingers.

It's part of it. It adds a hurdle to watching NFL that some people don't jump over.

it was hard to stop watching because years of emotional investment, etc.

once i did, came back a few weeks later...5 minutes i turned it off...sure part of it is i'm getting older, but i still want football and if there was football i would watch it

the nfl is not football. i can deal with the H2H rules which have been around longer, but the defenseless player and defensive holding...deal breakers. and now they've made the problem worse because offenses are looking like shite because of the offseason requirements the NFL didn't give a shite about and was easily conceded issue for them in CBA.

i see shite defense and shite offense...so i don't watch. the qbs are also way over protected and the reasoning is short sighted. manning and brady have missed entire seasons and the NFL kept churning along. so watering down the defense made the importance of a QB double overnight and so to protect them they...further water down the defense.

it's like the NFL is managed by retards. as a concession to the defenseless player and H2h, how about getting rid of the defensive holding rules so we can see some fricking marty ball and it can retain the physicality?

I've had the opposite experience. i had eliminated NFL entirely and now with amazon and hulu, the games are not only still available, but i see promotional material for them way more often

may be true. they were waiting on both sides to tire out and thinking it would just go away...but considering how aggressively they "protect the shield" that's a pretty fricking stupid course of action

trump actually didn't make this explode. the media did...they just can't help it. they hate him so much, they just couldn't resist the bait.

this place could use a little sprucing up. so many people willing to swallow big ropey loads so they can have their fix.
