Oscar Gamble dies at age 68
Best known for his afro, unique crouch batting stance, and the following quote regarding the circus-like atmosphere around the Yankees with Steinbrenner, Martin, et. al

I love airbrushed cap logos on 1970s Topps cards

I still have that entire set somewhere at my parents' home. Yes the airbrushing was terrible, I think they just did it to players they didn't have good uniformed photos of though.

They took the photos the year before. They did it when they were traded and didn't have a picture.
Like that Mariners card from 1977. They didn't even exist yet when they took the photo. The entire Mariners team set was airbrushed.

Saw him hit a homer in the Dome when the Yankees played an exhibition game.

Sad stuff. He was my batting coach in Montgomery when I was in little league. He and his kids were at the batting cages the same time I was practicing. He and my dad struck up a conversation and Oscar told him he would instruct me for free. He couldn't have been a nicer guy.

I dunno...a lot of the old ABA would say "not so fast, my friend". Dr. J might stake a claim:
But a fella named Darnell Hillman, who played for the Pacers in the 70's, might have the greatest claim: He was named runaway winner of the coveted "Biggest ABA Afro Award" at the 1997 ABA Reunion.

I dont know man. The sheer size of Gamble’s and the fact that he had to put a ballcap & helmet on top...Im sticking with him.

How did he ever get a batting helmet to fit?

Oscar drove the only Rolls Royce in Montgomery I believe.
And they don’t think it be like it is but it do.

When he got traded to the Yankees, they made him get rid of it...
quote:
On his first day of spring training with the Bombers, Gamble was informed he wouldn’t receive a pinstriped uniform until he complied with the team’s grooming policy — and the Yanks arranged for a car to take him to a local barber. He even claimed that Steinbrenner’s infamous policy caused him to miss out on a potential endorsement deal with Afro Sheen, although The Boss later worked out a financial deal with Gamble to offset the lost income.
"It cost about $75-80, even back then," Gamble said. "When I got back, all my teammates were waiting, they were rubbing my head, taking pictures. It was time for it to go."
