The Cobra didn't make it to his Hall of Fame induction ... his health was really dire, he had Parkinson's, and that's probably why he was on the list this time ... his peak was really short, but toward the tail end of the '70s he was a beast.

Growing up during this time and being a young kid, he seemed to be always doing something great whether with his bat or arm. He was a mainstay on this week in baseball.

Still cant believe he is not in the HOF...

RIP Cobra

Played on a team in little league for a few years in the mid 90s, the Wichita Cobras. Our unis looked exactly like the late 70s Pirates. Never knew Dave Parker was called "the Cobra." I guess my coach must have been a big fan. RIP

Yes he did and he had a good year with Cincinnati in the 1980s but 1975-79 he was as good as anybody, anywhere, anytime IMO.

Great throw but to give full credit, Gary Carter (another great one who was gone too soon) made a hellacious play on the receiving end of this throw.

Parker and Dave Winfield were prototypes for a new generation of baseball players.

God only knows what Parker would have done if not for the "diversion" that derailed him for several years (this is not the time nor the place to be graphic about such things). Again, at his absolute peak in the late 1970s he was as good as anyone, anywhere, anytime at bat and in the field.

When I heard Parker had made the HoF, I wrote a haiku in his honor.

The Cobra

Number thirty-nine
Vicious left-hand swing, with a
Cannon for an arm

Parker should be in Cooperstown - shame on the writers -

https://andscape.com/features/dave-parker-lives-with-parkinsons-disease-as-another-hall-of-fame-class-heads-to-cooperstown-without-him/

he did a lot with the youth in his hometown of Cincinnati after retiring from MLB - he was the first million dollar MLB player -

Dave Parker walks by his poster at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Youth Academy on January 25, 2018 in Cincinnati
quote:

CINCINNATI — The hot-trotting, earring-wearing, Muhammad Ali-rhyming Dave Parker of the 1970s and early ’80s now has a measured stroll, and the once-booming voice that demanded attention and produced echoes of laughter throughout major league clubhouses is turned down a few decibels.

But Parker still has that swag and wit.

The man who once terrorized opposing pitchers and baserunners who dared test his powerful arm spends Monday evenings sharing his wisdom and teaching fundamentals to young baseball players at the Cincinnati Reds Urban Youth Academy — a short walk from Parker’s residence in his hometown of Cincinnati.

“I’m just teaching fundamentals — sound fundamentals,” the 66-year-old Parker said. “You don’t see that in major league baseball now. You see guys miss the cutoff and poor baserunning decisions by young guys. This is what we’re trying to teach now.”

Apparently some folks missed that Parker WAS picked for the Hall of Fame this year, but unfortunately he didn’t make it to the induction ceremony.

He never got more than 24.7% of the writers’ votes and was in the top 10 of the balloting only once, in his first year on the ballot. And he never really got close to being picked on any of the veterans committee ballots … which were voted on by former players and managers and league officials, not writers … until this year when IMO they picked him because they knew he was most likely dying and they were trying to avoid uncomfortable situations like Ron Santo, Minnie Minoso, Gil Hodges and Dick Allen.

The argument that has been made against Parker is that his peak was so front loaded in the 1970s and he played another dozen years in which he was rarely truly elite. I have no problem with him being in because, again, his peak was so stupendous.

Dwight Evans is not in the HOF. Led the AL in HR in the 1980s with multiple gold gloves. Played the 2nd most games in a Sox uniform next to Yaz. Its a crime he isn't in.

People grind about the HoF getting watered down because too many people are getting in. I think I saw that you could put another 200 or so people in and you still wouldn’t be to 2% of everyone who’s ever taken the field in MLB.Evans absolutely should be in.
