I think its a good rule and there should be some governing body to regulate agent qualifications, same with lawyers and accountants. But Paul owns the agency and should have underlings that negotiate terms and contract language. Plus the one and done rule is gone in a couple of years so all the high profile players will be coming straight out of HS again, where the NCAA will have no say..

Selling people is pretty much an agent's job. Paul gets dinged for an untraditional background, but the job of an agent is largely a hustler.

It's hard to argue he and LeBron haven't been succesful together. Frankly, I can understand why LeBron would want someone like Paul. Paul can't screw LeBron over or his career disappears. A more established agent might not have that same reliance on LeBron.

This is what everyone says until they realize their financial manager has been embezzling funds from them for 30 years

Which wont surprise me if this surfaces in a few years with Paul.

What does that have to do with being an agent?
There are plenty professional jobs that require a 4 year degree. A 4 year degree is a pretty low bar to pass. In reality I would want my agent to have a law degree, and a lot of them do. The job of an agent revolves around understanding legal contracts, and the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the Player's association; it's not just about "how much can you get player x", because most of that is set by the market.

I thought you had to have a law degree to be an agent

I don't even see how a rule like this is legal.

How could it possibly be illegal? It’s a private business putting on requirements to do business with the league. Pretty simple

Hes a good agent.

Look at his client list and the money he’s gotten them. Bledsoe, Green, Simmons, etc

He was also Nerlens Noel's agent. Turned down 4 years and $70 million 2 years ago from Dallas because he thought he could get a max deal, eventually signed a qualifying offer for 1 year and $4 million that offseason with Dallas, then signed a 2 year / $3.7 million deal last summer with OKC. Noel missed out on around $43 million over the last 3 seasons for turning down that 4 yr/$70M offer

I think it's both. Whoever was going to be Lebron's agent was going to wield enormous leverage over a franchise. Make a shitload of money for both himself and Lebron. I believe RP is good at his job. Some people just know how to hustle, talk to people, and get stuff they need/want. Or for their clients. I don't think you get that by having a 4YD. The NCAA should put some kind of acception in there, that instead of a 4YD, they could intern or work at an agency for 4 or more years. Or have 4 or more years experience with a franchise front office.

So mostly I agree with RP, even though he probably manipulates franchises/players with Lebron.

I have no problem with the NCAA doing this. Fact is if he wants to represent a kid, he can. That player just forfeits their right to return to college ranks if it doesn't work out as planned.

Once the One and Done rule is killed in a couple of years, this won't matter, but I am fine with it for now. Most agents used to require legal training (as in being lawyers). Now any dipshit can apparently do it, and many of these players are so stupid, they will just let themselves be represented by a rock.

Agents are also corrupting the system for college athletes. This gives them some protection in certain ways.

Sorry for Paul that he spent more time trying to sell bootleg (if not stolen) crap out of the trunk of his car instead of going to college.

Water down the value of a degree to cater to people who will still have no shot at representing ball players? No thanks.

So you are ok with, say Henry Whiteguy getting a 4YD in applied gender studies with a focus on LGBTQ Porto Potties getting to be an agent over someone like Rich Paul? Simply because he has a 4YD?

That essentially IS the job of an agent.

See the word in bold. I just thought it was funny to misspell a word in a sentence downplaying the significance of an education

I don't think it is ridiculous for a COLLEGIATE system to prioritize those with COLLEGE degrees. How many other Rich Paul stories can you point to? Using one historical anomaly who only exists in the area due to a generational talent picking him up in his squad AFTER other agents did all of the major contracts for his career is a terrible way to set a standard. (Nike shoes, etc.) Find me 3 other agents who are moderately successful without college degrees, and I'll reconsider my position. Most successful agents not only get bachelors degrees, they also get Law degrees.

So the NCAA wants to add to the college debt issue....OK.

I don't think the lower number should affect whether or not a rule is good. But since the NCAA has amended the rule already, we don't have to worry.

In what world is it easier to become an NBA/NFL agent than it is to go to college...give me a break...
