re: Rec League was much more competitive than Travel Ball

I mentioned in travel you don’t see it 90% of the time. In some cases, you get the ace if the team. But not as long or as many innings usually due to a tournament. Also, 70mph at 46ft is equivalent to 76mph at 50ft. When they move to 13u, they’d need to see a 82mph ball. That’s my point. The unique 46ft mound gives them a preview of most varsity reaction. I bet Florida or South does have pretty elite travel ball compared to Ohio to your point.

My claim is pitching is more competitive and it prepares hitters well - better than travel. For $150 instead of $1500
but your point is trash
you say that is prepares the hitter more cause they are throwing up to the equivalent of 76 at 50'....are you under the impression there are not 12u kids throwing 76 in travel?
if you do, you need to go watch travel at the majors level at a tournament like the houston 1000 or PGI etc
and also understand that what you are seeing is a 1 in 10k chance of happening at most rec systems unless its atlanta or houston areas essentially. even then its rare.

Little league generally pulls the best players from a district and makes a super team
It was what fall ball used to be until every swinging dick with a son starts a travel ball team.
I have a cousin im very close w/ his oldest boy is on travel ball he is in the 7th grade and he is average at best and they spend $ and go to the tournaments .
He has a hitting coach , he sucks at hitting , but if a fool is willing to part wiylth his money that is his choice. Now the other way to look at it is you get to spend time w/ your kid and make memories ect.

like i said...understand you are seeing this at 1 league where there isnt elite travel so yea its better deal for you. but you fail to understand a lot
1) this doesnt scale across other regions but you are trying to make a blanket statement
2) you had to have 3 kids come back from travel to see that, travel got them there, not LL
3) you had to play by ll rules essentially losing a year of dev in both
fielding(because of the pitching) and the terrible base rules. not to mention it hurts the pitcher development
4) the small diamond does not prepare kids for the big field
but yea its pretty unique and awesome af but its rare.
and yea there is a 12u kid in BR that can throw 80+ right now. go to pgi in southhaven and there will be quite a few
but yes if you are seeing that, its the best pitching they will face until varsity prolly. 13u majors in the big tournaments is very similar to JV ball at the big schools and varsity at the 2a and smaller schools. might even be similar to varsity at the big schools in ohio. 14u majors is very very similar to what most big school varsities see except for the big p4 commits.

Travel ball ends up being so tiered that you end up with one team in an area that is just stacked with the best talent, a pretty decent dropoff to the next best team, and then it falls off a cliff. It's like that everywhere there's travel ball. So these stacked teams inevitably end up playing shite teams every weekend in pool play
Thats because most of the stacked teams would rather win plastic rings and beat up on AA teams instead of moving up to AAA where they should be playing against other stacked teams.

or that he wants to give his chance to make the HS team.
but i agree way too many kids playing travel ball but for many places its the only way to have a shot at making the HS team unfortunately. and there arent many leagues left for 13/14. maybe 6-8 in the whole state so kind of hard to really be able to compete for a HS spot at the big schools without doing all that
it sucks to a certain extent but having coach LL for quite a few years, the quality of rec had gotten so bad where you have so so many kids who want to play for the first time at 11 or 12u. then you have the moms who make their kid go play for the first time at that age and just use it as a babysitting service.
the kids who actually want to get better cant.

My kids are the ones making the claim. He said getting used to the crazy 46 mound made travel until varsity feel like it was on easy mode as he hasn’t had to have a quick of a reaction time until this varsity season. Both of my kids are very good and have had many more travel games than little league so seems like they’d know.

jesus christ you have very very bad reading comprehension and critical thinking sklills
i said 3 times your kids are correct....i also asked you to think critically and understand that hey....maybe my experience isnt the same across the country and only applies to my little area of ohio but apparently that is too much to ask
and the only reason the kids are good is because they had been playing travel baseball. so is it your contention all the kids should just play rec and not travel from 10-14 so that they lose out on over 250 practices and 200 games in that span? because that is what you are claiming, that rec prepares them more for HS baseball and that small sample size of 12-15 games did more than years of travel did.

I’m working - Looks like these espn teams including the South have similar pockets of talent like us. Simmer down and take a chill pill.

Play PG in Houston and you'll see it all day everyday. Shoot, just a regular 2D Select Series weekend in Louisiana in Open/Majors.

I know and believe it. Isn’t it crazy for $150 you can get 12 games where you’ll see an equivalent of a 76mph pitch in little league from 50 feet mounds? Quite a discount for experience like that.
Posted on 4/28/26 at 1:55 pm to gobuxgo5
no its awesome. but 12 games aint much to see that and its very rare you would see that in LL. when my oldest was playing, hardest kid in the league threw 60, my other kids saw that frequently in 10u in travel
its very rare and you should be happy but 12 games aint enough to prep for HS

My kid played in a 2d tournament. We each paid $50 and played 5 games.

Yea me too. Just played 5 games this weekend and didn’t see any pitchers like the little league ones. 2 threw super hard but wild. Every now and then you’ll run into that. Glad we do both but rec had more consistent and competitive pitching in 12u.

quote:Then go practice with them from 46 feet.
Because between 2 boys and 250+ travel ball games they never seen pitching like that in more than 10% of their travel games where the pitcher delivered the same pitching speed at 50 or 54 ft than they did at 46ft. Do you know how distance works? Travel ball don’t play at 46 feet mounds baw.
In fact, we’d face the same exact kids in travel but throwing from 50 was a bit easier than 46. Stil elite pitchers but 46 is insane.

or you can get a hack attack jr and give them all the reps at 70 mph at 46' in the world.

I love how travel ball triggers this board so much. Just say you’re poor.

Those pitchers are still playing travel ball, so how can you say the pitching in rec ball is more competitive when the kids who are pitching good all play travel ball?
He said why. The mound is at 46’. Most 12U travel ball throws from at least 50’. That’s a big difference.
That being said, OP is probably referring to the Eastbank LL who is allowed to pull an Allstar team from essentially all of Metairie and possibly even the River Parishes. It will always be an insanely good team that basically has a decent shot every year to make it to LLWS or at least the regional games which are also on ESPN.
