From page 5 of the Yankees/I.M. thread:
I've been an avid sports fan my whole life...that being said, you form likes and dislikes based on what you see when you were younger. Hell, when I younger neither my friends nor myself had spent less than two weeks of our entire lives in Los Angeles or Boston, but everyone I knew sure as hell chose sides (either Larry Bird and The Chief or Magic Johnson and Kareem). I was a Julius Irving and Moses Malone man, myself, and I had spent less time in Philadelphia than in either LA or Boston. So you pick a player you think is great, or a team with whom you can relate.
I've always loved baseball, but as a baseball fan, how in the hell can you really cheer (or even watch) a team who has never tasted success or anything close to it? [for example the Saints or Rangers] Simple, you pull for the little guy when his time has come.
Just like America was pulling for New Orleans so bad, because they really wanted something good to happen to a great American city which had seemed to be on a grander losing streak, which completely eclipsed an NFL franchise's on-field struggles.
Now here are the Rangers against the Yankee juggernaut and their $200MM payroll. Baseball fans in America know of their near-financial destruction, and how the new owner is one of only two numbers retired in Arlington, Texas (the other one never even wore a Rangers uniform). They see what a great team that the Rangers have assembled, as they are perceived as a bunch of kids having fun, as any team enjoying the historic ascent this franchise has never seen until now.
Of course true baseball fans can appreciate and respect the 40 pennants of the New York Yankees. To hate the Yankees would almost be un-American, like hating apple pie or the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The only people who should despise them are the teams who compete with them the most or gave away the greatest baseball player in the history of the game to them
If my son was drafted by the Yankees, I would think, Damn, this is the proudest day of my life.
But for this weekend, I'm hoping for the opportunity to watch MY team actually compete for a chance to go the World Series for the first time ever in my life, and this time, it's with my son who loves everything about the team including knowing the pitching rotation and batting order (and batting average of each player).
LET'S GO RANGERS!!

My two favorite teams are the Red Sox and whoever's playing the Yanks, so GO Rangers!

That'd be a Rangers fan
for what it's worth, nobody was a bigger Red Sox fan than me in 2004
That was the greatest ALCS I've ever seen...in the history of baseball, nobody has ever taken that much of a beating, stayed in the ring, and fought to a victory like the Sox.

I'm a bandwagon Rangers fan but I've got an excuse. I never gave a shite about MLB until I moved to the DFW area last year. I started attending some Rangers games then and have been a fan since then. Go Rangers!
(the Cowboys can still eat my shite for all I care).

you shouldn't kick a man while he's down, well...actually, that's actually the best time to kick him.

SKOOB!!
so much of me wanted to see a mini-pile of Rangers in the middle of Yankee stadium, but now that I think of it, we really should be The Ballpark at Arlington to spill that much Ginger Ale all over the locker room.
Posted on 10/21/10 at 4:58 pm to Chaz95
Yeah, it should be at the BPIA, but I wanted to see that dogpile to give them a taste of what I got to see in 96, 98, and 99 in Arlington.

feel free to argue with scubablake about the whether nolan ryan is the greatest pitcher to ever play the game, as his career spanned more decades than any professional athlete ever or how many no-hitters he pitched or how many strikeouts he pitched compared to the best yankee pitcher ever. we need to get this thread up to 8 pages

Got my support. I've watched every playoff game and complained to Scuba many times this year when FSN would televise the Astros here in Lafayette over the Rangers even though the Astros were sucking arse:I try to watch every time the Rangers are on in Lafayette on FSN.
