Eliminate all conference games. And have a 24 team playoff, rewarding strength of quality wins, especially on the road.
With the playoff conference championships for the P2 don't matter so the conference record doesn't matter. So let teams play the rivals their fans want them to instead of stupid random mega conference matches.
And add a 7 home game limit as an extra disincentive against playing 12 scrubs at home.

No more early enrollment. Make those kids stay spring semester in high school and sign in February like the good old days.
Transfer portal doesn’t open until after spring as well. They will still have all summer to gel with a team.
A transfer requires sitting out for a season (like the old way, unless the player has already graduated and still has eligibility, like the old way)
Incoming freshman sign a two year contract to stay at the school…. Contract is null and void if the head coach accepts another job.
12 teams is fine, but ND has to join a power 5 conference.
Eliminate conference championship games and move up army-navy…. Playoffs start week that army-navy was originally on.

Here’s a the solution I’ve been toying with lately:
Two-Playoff System for Division I Football
Structure:
• Two separate tournaments:
• P5 Playoff (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, Pac-12 legacy teams)
• G5 Playoff (AAC, Sun Belt, MAC, Mountain West, C-USA, Independents)
• Same format for both so the system is easy to understand and schedule.
?
Recommended Format: 12-Team Playoff (Best Balance of Rewards + Schedule)
Why 12 Teams?
• Top 4 seeds get true byes ? rewards elite teams.
• Smooth NFL-style bracket logistics.
• Works for both P5 and G5 without diluting competition.
• Keeps postseason length reasonable (3–4 games max).
?
Bracket Structure
Round 1 (Seeds 5–12 play)
• 5 vs 12
• 6 vs 11
• 7 vs 10
• 8 vs 9
Quarterfinals (Top 4 join)
• 1 vs Winner of 8/9
• 2 vs Winner of 7/10
• 3 vs Winner of 6/11
• 4 vs Winner of 5/12
Semifinals
• Standard reseeding or fixed brackets.
Championship
• Neutral site or highest-remaining seed’s home field.
Why This Works
• Same format for both playoffs = easy fan understanding.
• Gives emerging G5 teams a legitimate postseason.
• Preserves bowl tie-ins for non-playoff teams.
• Rewards excellence without bloating the season.

Return to a BCS plus 1 system
Return the conferences to 12 teams regionally based
Move the season up 1 or 2 weeks to start mid August and then you can have a signing day and portal opening after the NC

Return to the BCS
Doesn’t solve much as it’s still mostly driven by AP and Coaches poll rankings.

That's why you eleminate the human polls from the BCS formula

Then it isn’t the BCS formula any longer.
I do agree with making this formulaic.

There is nothing wrong with the playoff. Fixing NIL, Signing Day, and the Portal needs to be looked at first.
Agreed.
The inherent problem with college football is that strength of schedules are so drastically different from team to team it simply creates an unbalanced system that really can't be fixed other than by making the playoff field larger.

The human factor is the biggest problem. Computers have no prejudice, aren't concerned with brand names or conference.
