Back in the early to mid 2000s punt ugly was made fun of, laughed at, spit on, rejected.

Now there's hardly a team that doesn't use punt ugly. When was punt ugly accepted?

The NFL still mostly uses the old punt formation.

LSU was one of the first teams to try it. It was the BCS championship game in January 04... LSU had a punt blocked. Part of the reason LSU fans hated it.

That goofy rugby kick.

It worked until teams started to prep for it.

Justin Tucker was great at it, would be interesting to see him do it in the NFL.

Because the NFL has the athletes on the other side of the ball to deal with most return men. Devin McCourty is/was a gunner for New England... he's easily as or more athletic than most returners.

The reason the ugly punt is used in college is your gunners are usually not in the same sphere of athletic talent as the guy returning the kick.

It's called a rugby punt or a spread punt. Punt ugly sounds idiotic, unintelligent, and ignorant.

have they always used the punt formation where you have 5 on the line, 2 gunners, like three upbacks, and then the punter behind them?

I used to hate it. But I've come to accept it because we haven't had a punt blocked in a long time.
