8. Nuggets

Out: Wolves, Spurs.

The Wolves are clearly talented but I’m not a fan of their offseason moves + the growing tension between Butler and the rest of the team spells turmoil to me.

Pelicans will be a sneaky good team though they’re going to miss Rondo’s leadership and playmaking ability. Jrue will have to learn to set his teammates up for them to reach max potential. Blazers had an excellent offseason - bringing in more shooters + solid draft. Big bad Mo Harkless is the key to this team. If him and turner can shoot at a respectable clip from 3, plus play defense, they should be a playoff team.

Tbh every spot after the first two (Rox and GSW) is a pick em. Last year for example the difference between the 3 seed and the 9 seed was just a few games.

How many wins is LeBron worth to a team?
First off, you can't go off of number of wins last year and compare to this year, as this year most likely will be much more competitive, and pretty much every team's win totals should decrease.

I only brought up the Lakers' record last season to remind people that he's not going to a good team.

I don't know how many wins LeBron is worth to a team, but let's look at this another way.

If we extrapolate some data from LeBron's Cavs team and put them in the West, they wouldn't have made the playoffs last season. Cleveland went 35-17 against the East and 15-15 against the West. If the Cavs played 52 teams against the West and 30 against the East like Western Conference teams do, they would have won 46 games which would have put them as the 9th (or even 10th) seed in the West.

Another thing to look at is the Cavs' net rating. They had a net rating of +1.0. The worst net rating of any Western Conference playoff team was the Blazers with a net rating of +1.9.

Now, obviously the Cavs are not the Lakers. But is that Lakers team without LeBron significantly better than the Cavs? The Cavs last season were -1.3 without LeBron on the floor. The Lakers last season were -1.4.

LeBron will put the Lakers in playoff contention, but I don't think they make it.

Not true. And most models that do have the making the playoffs have them barely making the playoffs.

So it's not that crazy to have them just missing out.

ESPN's Kevin Pelton's RPM model had them finishing 9th, as one example.

FiveThirtyEight has them finishing 8th.

So acting like it's absurd that I have them at 10th is nonsense. And I'm not even married to the idea of them being 10th. I have said multiple times in this thread that I could easily see them being as high as 7th. Anything above that would surprise me. There are 6 teams fighting for 2 spots in my opinion, which means 4 teams will be left out.

And there are a lot of people arguing with me over where I put the Lakers, but they have not posted their own predictions.

The Spurs were only 2 games back of the 3rd seed last season. They had a very good defense. They had trouble scoring.

The Spurs will continue to have a good defense, yet they added DeMar DeRozan. They now have some scoring again, and will again be in the top half of the playoff seeding in my opinion.

The Spurs won 47 games last season and people act like they are gone forever.

You completely misunderstood what I was saying. You can look at win totals in the context of an individual season. But you cannot compare win totals accurately between two different years.

Sure you can...you might not be able to, but I think most people can baseline a reasonable prediction with last year's results being one of the factors. You also referenced last year's win totals twice on page 1.

quote:

this year most likely will be much more competitive, and pretty much every team's win totals should decrease.

Yes...some teams will win less... somewhat surprisingly, some teams will win more.

Thanks for the reminder.

quote:

I don't know how many wins LeBron is worth to a team

I think you know there are metrics that help quantify the number of wins a player contributes to a team... LeBron has also left and joined multiple teams in his career...all of which could have helped you estimate an answer to a very simple question.

quote:

If we extrapolate some data from LeBron's Cavs team and put them in the West, they wouldn't have made the playoffs last season. Cleveland went 35-17 against the East and 15-15 against the West. If the Cavs played 52 teams against the West and 30 against the East like Western Conference teams do, they would have won 46 games which would have put them as the 9th (or even 10th) seed in the West.

You aren't comfortable using last year's record, but you are going to "extrapolate" by dumping a team in the other conference?

quote:

Another thing to look at is the Cavs' net rating

Last year.

The Cavs last season were -1.3

I disagree.
