Pitt Panthers fans: Tell me about your uniforms

Watching the game tonight and always wanted to ask a longtime Pitt fan about your color scheme. Why did y'all ever get away from that stone ground mustard helmet and uniforms of the Dorsett and Marino days? The yellow mustard you have now is cool, but those Marino ones were iconic. Then of course y'all went through a decade or more of those straight gold ones which were bottom 5 in D1 of the worst uni's. I remember something about new administration wanting to drop Pitt and spell out Pittsburgh and other stupid decisions.

I was a freshman at Pitt with Tony Dorsett when they went to that color combo and the current Pitt logo on the helmet. It was a change from the old gold helmet with no logo that the terrible Panther teams the previous seven seasons wore. Their record during that span was 16-56. Johnny Majors was the coach who made the change.

Good info, thanks for sharing!

Also, the helmet in 1973 did not have the Pitt logo applied as a sticker like current day helmets do. The helmet was clear acrylic that was painted from the inside. I was in the football operations center when the helmet was shown to the team for the first time. The players were pumped.

Dang that Dorsett photo is awesome. Always loved the way he ran in his prime in Dallas, you could never square him up and send him backwards, he always fell forward for an extra yard or 2. Look at the gray facemask. Take your pick, could go gray, blue or mustard with the helmet and it all looked incredible. Then the contrast with this against Penn State last game of the year back in those days (I think Penn State was last game, not WVU), just screamed football to me growing up.

How else would you describe that iconic color? You can't say yellow, that's the shade they have now. Maybe I'm an idiot, that's the throwback color I always thought of. Whatever the true color, you can tell it was done with serious mixing and customization to get the right look.

Yeah, brown mustard would suffice, but yours is an accurate description

Why are you in here downvoting. It's a chill Friday night and this is just a trip down memory lane. Get a life, no one is downvoting you. Come on man.
Eta: Actually keep downvoting, while you're a busy little bee Pitt just scored before half to make it a 3 pt game. You're like a good luck charm in reverse lol.

If these players both have simultaneous possession, how does the offense not get the ball? They were both on the ground, both down. The play is over. How do the refs keep letting them fight over the ball?

Here’s a pic where you can see the clear acrylic helmet. The sticker buttons are applied to the outside of the helmet and appear to be floating. I also think the paint being applied to the inside of the helmet is what made the mustard color dull and not shiny.

Dan Marino and Tony Dorsett are somehow underrated. Marino still has the quickest release and was the best purse passer in NFL history
Tony Dorsett was amazingly fast, and a HOFer
Larry Fitzgerald is one of the most decorated WRs in NFL history and another HOFer
Aaron Donald is one of the best Defensive Lineman to ever play.
The Pitt Panthers have a lot of great alumni to play in NFL.

I think it's who had possession first surviving the ground which looked like the defensive player. Sorry, I was typing back to our resident Friday night downvoter to see what fully happened.

That 99.5 yard TD against the Vikings on Monday Night Football. Still watch that sometimes on YT just for the hell of it.
