The Pats may actually be contractually obligated to pay Hernandez’s estate a $3.5 million bonus that was stopped hours after his murder arrest in 2013, attorney William Kennedy told the CBS affiliate in Boston.
This could very well be true. This represents that payment of part of the signing bonus. He technically already earned this when he signed the contract. It just hadn't been paid out.
However, the Patriots don't want to pay it so Hernandez's fiance may have to sue the Patriots to get it.

The Patriots may also owe Hernandez an additional $2.5 million in guaranteed base salary that was also halted after his 2013 arrest, lawyer Michael Coyne told CSNNE.com.
This is a bit more clouded. While the salaries were guaranteed, the Patriots believe that his guarantees were voided by his conduct after his arrest but not his conviction.
IIRC, this is due to language in the CBA which governs all NFL contracts.
CBS Sports article
quote:
Every NFL contract I've seen since the new CBA took effect in 2011 contains language voiding contract guarantees for an exhaustive list of defaults by the player.
PED usage, substance abuse, conduct detrimental and personal conduct suspensions are usually among the numerous defaults. Typically, any guarantees in current and future contract years immediately void with a default. The player will still have the opportunity to earn to the salary that is no longer guaranteed on a non-guaranteed basis.
So we'll just have to see how this plays out.

I'm betting on a hung jury.

I'm just glad that he's been cleared and is now officially innocent.

One way to spin it -- can definitely see it being used that way. It could also be a last ditch saving grace for the accused

Good. They played with fire, pay the piper. Like they didn't hear all the stories coming out of Florida.

Don't forget about his NFL pension...
Article 53.6 of the CBA states that for players who began their careers before 2012, only three credited seasons are necessary to be vested in the league’s retirement plan (now it’s five years). Hernandez played three seasons before his arrest, so he will be eligible for the minimum pension payments.
If he didn't specifically state a beneficiary to his pension, then it would go to the estate.

So the Patriots pay because his case reverts back to the beginning. Yet the Lloyd family can still sue even though in every other way the conviction doesn't exist. Makes a ton of sense. If he isn't guilty by MA law at that point then the Lloyd family shouldn't be able to sue. It's that way of thinking that has gotten our country to the point it's at now. Just stupid.

Wrongful death can cover a bunch of different things, not just murder or criminally related deaths.

Just stupid.
