In going to Vegas 31-4 for the start of CFB...let's say I parlay O/U on Oregon game, OU -30, Texas -29, and ohio state -22...bet 200 to win 2000...then I place an individual 200 dollar bet on those four games so if I hit only three I miss the parlay but make more than what I spent on the parlay back...right? + I have actually given myself a shot at the parlay plus extra money for the single bets...am I missing something?

But it is still the best way to do it right? You have bet 1K with the chance of winning a good amount plus you have outs for hedging...is this a common way of betting?

no its stupid. for one, you are putting $200 on a parlay. might as well just give $200 away.

Yes but if you go 2-2 then you lose money obviously. As for hedging, In the long run its not sound betting (you lose tremendous value, there's a math behind it but don't feel like explaining). Only hedge on future bets. Even parlays are not a good way to bet, always try individual bets.

If you're just doing it for fun to follow those games and you have $200 to spare then go for it, although it would suck if the first leg of the parlay doesn't hit.

Don't put 200 bucks down on a 4 team parlay. You're going to lose. If you like those four games a lot, go in on each of them individually and then maybe put 50 down on a parlay with all of them.

I think I've hit a parlay involving 4 even money plays (i.e. not a moneyline parlay) once in my entire life. They're really tough to hit.

I have done a 4-5 team parlay every football weekend for a very low dollar amount, (like $2-3) and have only it 2 in 3 years of betting.

Parlays are just a way to lose money, but hitting one every blue moon is exciting.

I agree. Usually pick a 3-4 game parlay for a few bucks most weekends and I can only think of twice where it hit. I'll prefer to put more bucks on it and go with a teaser so at least I have the spreads in my favor. Not going to get rich on a teaser, but you're gonna go broke betting parlays.

A 4 game parley @ 10 to 1 is a sucker bet - explained below

Betting straignt

Game 1 - $200.00 bet = winnings of $200.00

Game 2 - Game 1 winnings + original $200.00 ($400.00 bet) = winnings of $400.00

Game 3 - Game 1 winnings + Game 2 winnings + original $200.00 = ($800.00 bet)= winnings of $800.00

Game 4 - Game 1 winnings + Game 2 Winnings + Game 3 winnings + original $200.00 = ($1600.00 bet) = $1600.00 winnings

Total winnings - Game 1($200.00) + Game 2($400.00) + Game 3($800.00) + Game 4($1600.00) = $3000.00.

$3000.00 dollars is more than $2000.00

So if you want to bet a 4 game parley make sure you pick games with the kickoff spread far enough apart to allow you to roll your bets.

edited - adjusted math $3200.00 to $3000.00

The 10 to 1 4 game parley odds given at a sports book are based on all 4 games bet being the standard -110 book. If the games you include in your parley deviate from the standard the sports book will adjust your parley odds accordingly. Risking $220.00 to win $3000.00 is better odds than risking $200.00 to win $2000.00.

ohhh.. i was reading your post wrong. i was thinking you were outlining single bets

I was outlining single game bets which rolled the original bet plus your accumilated winnings into the next single game bet over a span of 4 games. This is essentially the same bet as a 4 game parley except the payout is 50% greater. If you lose any of the single game bets out of the 4 you stop the roll.

My example was just to illustrate that parleys at sports book odds are sucker bets.
