So why did they not try to do a bubble for the olympics? It could have been by sport even.

Why not? If everyone in the bubble starts off negative then the orgies are going to nonCovid orgies also. Shouldn’t be an issue.

Probably because it’s a shite ton of people you’d have to quarantine. Probably not realistic

Just my opinion, the NFL and MLB could each survive one full season without the revenue from the gate - tickets/concessions/revenue from in-site sponsorships (NBA and NHL had most of their regular seasons in the books before play suspended).

The countries that host the Olympics, just get one shot, and they are counting on much more of the revenue from the venues and countries participating being “as business as usual as possible”.

It was a very easy decision to kick the thing down the road at least one year to see if medicine catches up and things can be normal.

If I was Japan, I would be telling the OIC that I am good with waiting until 2022 (doing both summer and winter in the same year) if it helps me put out the experience that I originally signed up for.

The decision had to be made early for logistical reasons so it was made in March.

If the Olympics had been in the US would you have been OK in March with opening our borders 4 months later to people from all over the world?

10,000 athletes alone in a Summer Olypmics. A multiple of that for all of the people needed to run the thing. That would be an impressive bubble. It would have to entail incredibly punitive punishments for breaches (e.g. immediate disqualification/bans) given what would be at stake. In Japan's favor at least is really low infection volume.

I'd assume any bubble configuration would probably have athletes grouped by country. Bioterrorism would legit be a serious threat for our (and other) athletes. One hotel/hospitality worker (placed there or even by accident) could bury our entire contingent.

I just can't imagine athletes wanting to participate in that kind of environment. Pronounced initial quarantining, the inability to leave the bubble for anything, not having any fun festive vibe to speak of, the strong likelihood of postponements royally screwing up event schedules (with controversies probably to follow), total nonstop paranoia - that doesn't sound like an event anyone participating in would enjoy. I'd rather see world class athletes at their best without this crap over their heads or not at all.

Tokyo/Japan also has no incentive to go through any trouble for a games that 100% will not have fans (they flat will not allow the rest of the world to come infect them). There is no point if they won't get any economic boost or the pride that comes with hosting the world.

We're not having another Olympics until we have a vaccine.

Ryan Lochte definitely would have been the one to ruin an Olympic bubble and infect everyone

The concept of having to quarantine the most fit people on the earth for this virus seems completely ridiculous.
