Okay I'm a long time non-Hockey fan. I don't really know shite about the sport. I mean I know the basics. I've been to a couple Kingfish games when I was a kid, and I went to a Preds/Capitals game last year. But I'm going to make a real actual effort this Olympics to follow the game.
So, what resources would you recommend for a 'beginner'? And I'm referring to good team-by-team capsules, etc.

The 1980 team was supposed to medal, I'm nearly certain. They just weren't supposed to get gold (only one certain team was, we all know who that team is).
FWIW, the Soviets got silver still (many think they got bronze, since it wasn't the US's or Soviet's final game, but the tourney was different back then, in how it was played [the medal round was round robin, not single elimination]. In fact, if the US would have lost the last game to Finland, the USSR would have actually still won the gold. Many people don't realize that), but the silver was basically like going win-less, in their eyes.

I would try the Hockey News, they tend to do have team capsules. And ESPN has the rosters on their site somewhere. Let me think on this.
I always pick Sweden. It's just an old habit. Never underestimate goaltending, so I'll guess:
G: Sweden
S: Canada
B: Russia
4th: Finland

Pretty much agree. My order might differ with who gets which medal, but I agree those will be the Final Four, and Finland will lose the Bronze game.

Gold:Canada vs. Russia
Bronze: USA vs Sweden.
Canada will probably beat Russia because ovie will get a shitload of penalties; Olympic hockey is more of a gentlemans sport than the NHL and is refereed as such.
US isn't as bad as you think, and as a rangers fan I can tell you that lundqvist is playing like shite

Yeah, I've kind of been harsh on them ("no chance at a medal"). They should make the quarters, and from there, 2-1 gets them a medal, so it's possible. I just don't think they're as good as the aforementioned teams.

Yep, the ice being larger has a neat affect on the Games, too. It's similar to NHL hockey, but unique.

I was unaware. How much bigger?

FWIW, I just looked it up. Since it's being played in Vancouver, in an NHL arena, the rink will still be NHL-sized.
Usually, though, NHL's 200 ft long by 85 ft wide, while the Olympics/international are 210 by 98. The increase in size benefits skilled guys (that's why, typically, Euro NHL players are more "skilled" and NA guys are more "power").

question.....
do NHL teams just do without some of their players for this stretch?

There are no NHL games for two weeks. Kind of like a really long All-star break.

NHL shuts down for the Olympics.

agreed with all of this
G: Canada
S: Russia
B: Sweden but the US will make it somewhat interesting
if Canada fails to win the gold on their own ice the fall out would be immense. That would be the equivalent of a US Olympic team made up of MLB All Stars losing the Baseball Gold medal to Cuba in Dodger Stadium

BTW, when does the Olympic hockey start? I know the Jackets have a game this sunday, so it can't start until after that. How do they have time to practice?
Posted on 2/12/10 at 11:33 am to SprintFun
First games start on Tuesday, the 16th. As for practice, each team does, during the summer have a team camp, which sort of serves as a tryout/practice (tryout for borderline guys, practice for guys they know will make it), but I don't know how/if they practice at the Olympics. This is probably the one (and only) advantage teams like Germany and Kazakstan have in the Olympics.
Also, kind of funny, the Vancouver Canucks play here in C-bus today. It will be their 7th game in a 14 game road trip. They won't play on home ice from January 28th until March 13th.

And another thing I hate is that Rick Nash will be on the same line with my least favorite hockey player ever. Makes me sick to my stomach.
Posted on 2/12/10 at 12:07 pm to StraightCashHomey21
I may have to cheer for Rick Nash to have zero points, if it means Crosby gets zero. Yes, I hate Sid that much that I have to wish bad for the captain of my favorite team, just so Crosby does bad.
Or at least, I'm hoping, they eventually put Rick on a different line.
