sooo I'm thinking concealed carry is out of the question?...

They allow it at Pinehurst. They hand out badges to anyone who shows up with one and a permit to have one.

Pinehurst is my home town, headed there tomorrow for the rest of the week. Definitely no phones. Lots of photo ops in and around the resort though. The Carolina hotel across the street from the clubhouse is cool, though it's probably hard to get into this week.
Stuff going on in the village every night. There's a few good bars/pubs in the village, many more options if you venture in to southern pines. Really looking forward to seeing the course and how different it plays from the previous two opens.

why would a course like Pinehurst put down Champions? I thought that grass was pretty much outdated with much better hybrids out there now...
I've heard this same thing from a lot of posters on this board and the general golfing public I've come in contact with. A lot of people I get paired up with when I play by myself start talking turf to me when I tell them I'm studying turfgrass.
I talked about this with my professor on the way to Memphis the other day (played Nicklaus Signature Course - Spring Creek Ranch). Champion has taken a PR hit on the market for some mutations and off-types in some of their greens. Not really sure how it happened or what is happening.
Champion is still a great grass. Probably the best option you have IMO. That or MiniVerde. TifEagle seems to be a cheaper option for normal courses.
Look at the top courses in the Southeast switching to bermudagrass, you see Champion. Some MiniVerde, but a lot of Champion. The Honors (#23 in the world) in Chattanooga switched last year. Old Waverly (Top 100 in US course - #1 in MS) has had Champion for awhile.
If you got the budget and manpower to maintain it, it is the lowest, fastest, truest, and slickest you will get a bermudagrass. MiniVerde could probably be just as close, but Champion markets to top courses very well. They have quite the list of courses to point to and say "Look, we are at ALL these great courses."
I actually have been talking with the owners of Champion the past few days. They are mailing me some sprigs of Champion as we speak. Donated for my research project, so props to them.

My super just told me that if they do that they have to have a heating system in place for the cold winters.
To keep them in the condition they are expected for Pinehurst, yeah. Seeing a lot of renovations to bermuda in the Carolinas though. And some zoysiagrass.
Same kinda system they have at Augusta to keep their bentgrass cool in the summer.

No arguments here!
As you can tell by my massive post count I don't post much, but I'm happy to answer any questions about the area for those who are in town. My dad is lurking around here somewhere too I imagine

Thanks for the info.
One of the 4 of us lives in Wilmington so we're making a 4 day mini-vacation out of it. For Sunday, we're basically just gonna drive from Wilmington to the course and drive back after so we'll miss out on all the rest of the stuff you mentioned.
Gonna hit carolina beach saturday, play golf Monday somewhere in Wilmington, watch the world cup monday night, come home tuesday.

Whatever happened to that super at squire who grew his own strain of bent that could adapt to warm climate? In 2006 or 07 he was said to have to sprigged his practice green with it to see how it maintains traffic.

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping you would see that
And you're pretty much dead on, I hear lots more TifEagle and Miniverde talk these days instead of Champions...interesting to hear that you still believe it is the best option....

It looks like they just sprayed a shite ton of round up out there and called it an upgrade.

1. Buy 90 gallons of round up.
2. Find a weird nerd and former Masters winner.
3. Make them spray the shite errywhere.
4. Call it an upgrade.
5. Host US Open.
6. Tell everybody it took a lot of thought and planning.

It looked like that "bush" wasn't rooted in the ground. So, that would make it a loose impediment. Unless I couldn't see it in the video.
