They've made some addition to secure third....
Gomes is a platoon player, Napoli is 31 and while I think he improves from last year he won't ever hit like he did 2 seasons ago, big question with them is the returning players in Ortiz, Pedoria, Jacob, etc

39 Million over 3 years for Victorino is beyond dumb, and apparently the Indians offered 4/44 mil. I understand having money to spend but jesus.
Napoli is at least defensible. He hits for power and can play catcher at least part time.
Andy Oliver will be a good pickup for the pirates, he has premium arm strength. He has struggled finding the strike zone as many power lefties do. Being with the Pirates will give him a chance to try and find the zone in a less pressure packed environment.
ETA: Red Sox are trying to trade Ellsbury

Maybe not they balked at 8 million a year for Keppinger.... Maybe a 1 year deal they over pay for but not multi year deal

Well they want to get under the luxury tax so they trying to avoid the big multi year deals. Arod not being able to play is a good thing because if he misses 80% of season the Yanks have up to 80% of his contract insured.

This. I feel like everyone is just towing the company line and ripping them. I really like it. Napoli and Victorino are really damn good ballplayers. 3 for $39 MM contracts will not kill them. They are made of money, why should they sit there and suck dick? Of course, they will need better pitching to be a top team, but I like their lineup.
When you are wealthy, you do not need to break it down and start all over like a mid-market club. There are multiple ways to rebuild.
I think Napoli will mash in Fenway. He takes walks and has elite power and can spray the ball. One of my favorite hitters in baseball. I think he could upwards of 35-40 bombs and an OPS that is around .900 if he gets a full season of plate appearances.
Baloo, Napoli is not that fat. He is definitely somewhat of a three-outcome hitter, but baseball-reference lists him at 6' and 215 pounds. He wears a jersey like eight sizes too large.

Over the last 5 years he's averaged a HR every 14ABs.
If he gets 500 ABs he'll prob hit that. 600 would def put him there

Exactly. I know 2011 was a bit of aberration, but I think he averaged a homer for roughly every 12 AB's and 14 PA's.

There's a reason he hasn't played a full season....
He is fairly fragile. Love Napoli and he can go on a huge tear, but just like with Hamilton, expect him to miss at least 20 games.
His HR total will be about the same, Fenway doesn't provide him any advantage that RBiA did. Wish Texas would've kept him, but not for $13million a year.

A 31 year old who hasn't played a full season and a 33 year old guy who regressed last year.... That has more to do with it than length. If both were a couple years younger fine but I doubt either magically finds fountain of youth. Although I do believe Napoli hits 30-35 home runs in Fenway
