Wasn't that vote almost a party-line vote pitting the publics against the privates/Catholics, as well? As I recall, it was expressly for the purpose of keeping Evangel and John Curtis out of 5-A.

Ron Brocato has a Catholic-centrist view, but he's still about the most dedicated high school writer in the metropolitan area, along with Kenny Trahan.

It's this rule against playing up that killed the Catholic League, or will kill it in the near future if I read this thread properly. Reading Brocato's article, after first posting, he's said the same thing, but with examples.

We've done the open-house circuit over the last three years or so. Holy Cross School is dedicated to keeping enrollment at 1,000, total. They have stated they are aiming for 125 students maximum per grade level. That means they are shooting for 500 in 5th through 8th, and 500 in the high school.

it's unfortunate that the good Catholic schools are caught up in the backfire of this rule, but as a public school fan, it's good that the so-called "football camps" don't get illegitimate 5A and 4A status to sell to prospective recruits, and that the most attention goes to 5A where it deserves to be.

bottom line, if Curtis or Evangel wants to be in the higher classifications, build a legit school

owl i agree.. but..

being 2a has not hurt curtis or eca in any way - on the field...

what it did is hurt a lot of 2a and 1a schools...

if the LHSAA would enforce the rules problem solved...

the only teams really hurt by curtis and eca in 2A are the other teams that had a legit shot to win state without the two... most times that's maybe one to three teams. every other team is probably where they'd be without curtis and eca IMO.

and it's not like eca and curtis are on god mode with NFL players against 15 year old kids. eca went to overtime with kentwood in 1A and should have lost to capitol, and john curtis did lose to st. james.

Owl, I think we're looking at a more global, long-term view of the JC/ECA situation, and not any one particular game or season.

As a somewhat tradition-minded Catholic League fan, I'm deeply disappointed by this. Now we all know these schools will still have some rivalries, but without the district context, they will lose some luster. And, to me, that's sad. It's already disheartening to see photos of yesteryear with a packed Tad Gormley Stadium, and now, it only fills about five sections, total if you count stragglers sitting around the stadium.

Seems as if many D1 prospects aren't going to Curtis now, maybe because of playing in 2A?

And Rummel only has 800+ kids? They used to be the biggest Catholic League school, no?

Curtis rarely has more than 1 or 2 real top recruits each year.
The system is what wins for them.

A good friend of mine from high school worked there as a trainer/therapist just a few years after graduating. He told us that their athletes weren't much better at all, than ours. We were a small, Catholic boys school (seminary, actually.)

They were more disciplined, and knew that system inside and out. This is where they were superior. Of course Reggie Dupard was a beast, but still ;)

I think one of the things that helps Curtis and ECA is that they get the kids in 5th and 6th grade into the system. They have about 3-4ys of learning the plays so that by the time they reach HS they know whats going on. I think it's BS that they can't play up any more. The LHSAA needs to put in a rule that says you have to sit out a yr if you transfer. That would stop some of the big 5A schools (WM) from "recruiting" kids too.

I think you're underrating Comeaux...he'll definetly get a look from STM. He built a program that's had the most playoff success and produced more D1 players than any private school in the area.

He moved to STM for one reason that I know and that was to be closer to family, the other was and is most likely, was his goal of taking over for Hightower. If they pass him over he'll be somewhere else pretty quickly.
