Can someone explain in layman's terms what is a compensatory pick and how do teams earn them?

Is anyone else getting tired of "if you think that name sounds familiar"?

I swear, everyone drafted is related to someone who played in the NFL.

If a team loses a top-tier player to FA, they may get a compensatory (extra ) pick at the end of the 3rd rd. Not sure exactly how they measure it. Thought Cowboys would get one for losing Ronald Leary, for instance, to Denver

NFL labels some good players as compensatory free agents and if a team loses them in free agency they get a compensatory pick.

3rd round is the highest you can get. There are comp picks at the end of rounds 3-7. You have to lose a pretty big FA and not replace him in order to get the 3rd round pick, but the formula is not made to the public

It usually results in New England having lots and lots of compensory picks.

This is what I understand about the comp system.

You have to lose high value free agents AND bring in less FAs than you let leave. I am relatively sure breaking even is not good enough. If I remember correctly, not picking up a team option is considered letting a free agent leave. Resigning a person also doesn't effect the system one way or the other.

That's why, when you see a team lose a decent or better free agent, it's beyond dumb to sign meh backups and special teamers. If you lost say 1 big free agent, two good ones, and three mehs, you'd be in line for say a third, a sixth and a seventh for comps. If you then signed seven backups that had no chance of making the final roster, you receive nothing.

Usually because they let a lot of FAs leave

They will but it will be in next year's draft iirc. Dallas should have something like 10 picks next year.

I LOVE that pick. Xavier Woods

That's great! Also, isn't he a safety? Remember his name as a target I wanted them to look at before the draft

Yeah I saw him as high as 3rd round in some earlier or mocks. Seems like great value getting him in the 6th.

I've been salty all day since they passed on grabbing a safety in the 4th just to draft Beasley Jr.

See.. trust the FO more...last few yrs have been great since Stephen stepped up.

The punt return game has been a wreck for years. I don't mind a ST in the 4th, esp one who gives us Cole insurance- that's Dak's security blanket. If Cole went down , we would've been focked

Honestly, it is pretty fair though

The saints have been full fricking retards in the draft since 2012

We barely have any players still on our team from the draft

So to see your college team who is only an hour away have so much NFL success, as you watch your NFL team suck huge dick every year in the draft, it is understandable you get paranoid
