When Trotz was given Kariya, his team was 3rd in goals scored. He's a guy who adjusts his style to his roster, a critical skill in Nashville, which was devoid of top end offensive talent in his tenure. But the biggest thing about Trotz, other than he usually outperformed his roster, is that he believes in puck possession. You cannot win in the NHL without the puck. Which sounds so basic, but that is the fundamental argument over fancystats: control the puck.

Kings look like they're going to run them out of the building. Blackhawks are playing flat

I don't know what the Kings did to suddenly figure out the Blackhawks -- I mean the Hawks had dominated them going all the way back to last season -- but whatever it is, it's working.

They're attacking whoever has the puck and shutting down the passing lanes. The last 4 periods have been a disaster for the Hawks

Looking forward to Game 5 tonight! Both the Habs and the Rangers are playing great right now. I hope Hank & Co can close it out tonight, but I think this game as it stands now is a toss-up.

Tokarski is playing really good, esp for a dude that is going into his 7th NHL game of the season tonight. It's almost as if there's no dropoff between him and Price.

Hank is playing well right now but the power play has got to improve. Something tells me it will.

As for the Baloo / Hog disagreement on Trotz, I would have to say that Trotz will adjust to his roster, but he's never had talent like Ovechkin. Thought he was an awesome coach in Nashville and actually surprised they made the change. Can't turn make a chocolate souffle out of the ingredients for shite soup.

Really wierd about the Caps GM though. Anyone from the current office should be sent to Gitmo for the way they have terrorized DC. Just looking at CapGeek, and it's like you have Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich, Brouwer, Ward, Carlson, Greene and then a bunch of interchangeable guys you've never heard of before. Similar situation to Nashville, except with the emphasis on the offense instead of defense.

That being said, who is Pittsburgh going to get? Options are getting thin for guys with

quote:

So, what’s left? Openings remain in Vancouver, Florida and Carolina and Dan Byslma’s fate remains up in the air in Pittsburgh. As for the candidates? John Stevens, Kevin Dineen, Jeff Blashill, Guy Boucher, Willie Desjardins and Brad Shaw are still available, as are recently dismissed bench bosses John Tortorella, Peter Horachek and Adam Oates.

NHL Coaching Landscape

I guess Pittsburgh would be left between Renney and Tortorella? Renney I could see, he's a players coach and would take all the shite Malkin and Crosby can muster. With the shot blocking prowess that Malkin displayed, I could almost see a great marriage with Tortorella, especially given that he's won a stanley cup with less talent, but that argument hasn't worked in NY or Vancouver.

Something to think about after the season I suppose. They definately aren't getting Babcock. That would be like leaving a good situation only to take the reigns of a team that just fired a good coach for good performance.

The Pens will most likely almost assuredly promote WBS head coach John Hynes.

[link=(Here's an article on Hynes destined for NHL last year)]LINK[/link]

quote:

John Hynes, the coach at Wilkes-Barre who is running this week's Penguins prospect camp, is widely regarded as a can't-miss future NHL coach.

“The time will come when, of course, I'll want to move on and be in the NHL,” Hynes said. “But I'm very happy right now with the way things are.”

In Hynes' three years in Wilkes-Barre, his team has produced respective point totals of 117, 95 and 88. He has led his team to improbable playoff victories — Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won a series in May after it had fallen down, 3-0, in a best-of-seven series against Providence — and, by all accounts, has done a masterful job with a lineup that showcases more grinders than blue-chip prospects.

quote:

Hynes is the latest in a strong line of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coaches.

During the past decade, in fact, 10 percent of the NHL's current head coaches were developed in Wilkes-Barre.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, Montreal coach Michel Therrien and Columbus coach Todd Richards were head coaches for the Penguins' AHL affiliate.

Two other Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coaches, Todd Reirden and Joe Mullen, have later become successful NHL assistant coaches.

Many around the NHL believe Hynes' time will come.

It's another reason the Pens kept Bylsma around for a bit, didn't want to pressure Hynes or distract his team they're in the AHL Conf Finals up 1-0, which has only boosted his stock even more.

I will point out you named 7 players, 2 on defense. And trust me, you left off the most important player on the roster -- the gamble on waiting for Kuznetsov. That's an 8 player core by your estimation, which is pretty deep. Of course the rest of the roster is interchangeable parts, that's how you build a roster. (Though I do disagree on who the core is, but that's neither here nor there).

Look at capgeek though, that roster has plenty of flexibility and they aren't in any danger of being priced out of their parts. There's some overpays in there (most notably the Laich millstone), but there's really no longterm drags on the payroll outside of Ovechkin, and that's the price for superstar talent. The longterm roster construction and cap management is pretty well done.

I think the terror was performed by the coaching staff, who couldn't make the pieces work. We're talking about a staff that tried to "fix" Holtby, a goalie who had a better save % than Rinne, and couldn't find top 6 minutes for Erat and Penner. Penner was only a top line guy on the best offense in hockey, but he's a fourth liner in Washington? That's... interesting. The Caps have not hired a head coach with NHL head coaching experience since 1997.

I wouldn't call the best player on the team a "drag" . But who can they find that is talented enough to play with him? I would agree the cap management is pretty good, but there just doesn't seem to be any exciting free agents out there.

As for Kuznetsov, seems like the real deal after looking him up, but as a former Hartford Whaler fan I'm far too negative on "hot prospects" to ever give it credence until they prove themselves. Sure, maybe it will happen in a few years. What about next year?

Who was hired by the front office.

Who would you rather have on your roster starting the season? Perhaps Holtby's perceived struggles were also a function of a terrible system.

Speaking of prospects, looks like Jesper Fast will get another chance at the playoffs tonight with the Rangers, unless Stepan decides to go out there with a football helmet to protect his jaw.

I give you that. If there's one thing the front office was terrible at, it was hiring coaches. they found lightning in a bottle with Boudreau, but otherwise, they have whiffed. Every time. McPhee's greatest failure as a GM was an inability to recognize coaching talent. I'd fire all of our assistants as well (except maybe Kolzig).

Kuzentsov is the single most important Cap. In order to compete for a Cup, you need guys on their ELC's or smaller contracts to produce big numbers. The Habs are grossly underpaying Subban, the Rangers are getting cheap minutes from Pouliot, Kresider, and Stralman. The Hawks are still getting Kane and Toews for less than they are worth, and the Kings... well, they robbed the Flyers of Richards and Carter. Put it like this, if Kuz isn't at least a top 6 winger, the Caps aren't winning anything regardless.

From a quality standpoint, I'd rather have Rinne. Taking into account contracts, Holtby. Holtby allows you to pay more elsewhere.

I am rooting for the Rags to win the Cup just so Lunqvist gets one in a year it doesn't affect the Caps. He's sort of good.

I never thought Thunderdome Baloo would come out in a Cap discussion. You sir, are an evil, evil man for that statement you made.

I will rescind my Orioles bandwagon ticket due to your careless choice of words.

I never have wished Vancouver to eliminate the Flames or NYI, NYR, or Philly to eliminate your Caps.

Yes definately agree with that, otherwise you'll never be able to get beyond 2 lines which isn't enough depth

.

Dude is going to get PAID next year. But as I pointed out earlier, history was on the Habs side on that contract. (cough) Del Zotto (cough).

Was shocked that each of these guys are under $2M. For whatever reason I thought Krieder was over $2M. Stralman is probably the most under-rated defenseman on the team. Great possession guy. Would be absolutely dumbfounded if Pouliot can recreate the year he has had in subsequent years.

Also, you're forgetting about Mats Zuccarello at $1.3M / year. Glad to see that midget finally get some minutes to show what he can do.

It's wierd: I derive much more happiness seeing that dude make a play than I do Nash or Richards. He's not better than the other two, for sure, but he kind of carries himself like he still deserves to be in a beer league. Ugly skater with a strong shot that somehow finds the right place at the right time.

I view Lunqvist winning a Cup as unavoidable, so I'd rather it happen now. It's just taking the terrible outcome and getting it over with. Don't worry, I still hate the Rangers. But I'm sorry, the Habs are excluded from ever being loveable, plucky underdogs.

I think that's true for any fan of a team. You like the rank and file guys a lot more, as you've seen their ups and downs. You're more possessive of those guys. I care more about Jason Chimera suddenly scoring goals than Backstrom's sustained excellence. Because he's our guy. It's why Hendricks being on another team kills me, but i'm thrilled he got paid.

I get it resentment of the Hab 5 and the greatness of lighting and passing the torch is understandable. But to wish the NYR to win a Cup, that is just umm wow, just wow. Next thing I will see you post is...

Earl Weaver was just a terrible manager and Joe Altobelli was the real brains behind the Orioles.

Jim Carey was the best goalie of the 1990's

Oh come on now. Your hate for the Rangers is only qualified by the fact that you are playing them right now. Your primary rival up to this point are a beer league team in Toronto that for some reason found its way into the NHL, and Boston who you just defeated. I don't know if the Rangers even make it into the top 3 of your rivals when you consider Ottawa, Colorado (former provincial rivals).

I have always liked the habs, but just for today and the previous week I will hate you in the face. I will resume to rooting for the habs should King Henrick have a complete mental breakdown and goes all Fleury up in this bitch.

Speaking of bitch, how's Therrien treating you? Just try to concentrate on the play in front of you and tying up the series, but no he has to talk about how they are going to injure Brassard and that Derek Stepan really isn't injured. Typical frog.

My resentment to the Rangers is from 2 specific people...

Mike Keenan
Mark Messier

I just do not like the Blueshirts for somereason, never have never will.

ETA:

Vigneault with the Rangers makes me hate them also, still blame him for the destruction of the Montreal legacy.

The only Ranger I had some admiration for was Brian Leetch and it was only when he played for Team USA

I can understand the hate for Keenan, He's just a dick. Messier, for his unparalelled awesomeness for basically being a bull on the ice, and Vigneult for the reasons you mentioned.

But to be fair, Vigneult was the runner up for the Jack Adams during his third season with Montreal, AND historically his teams find a way to screw it up.

Anywho, looks like Stepan is going to be in the lineup tonight. You think Therrien knows exactly where he's hurt?
