Converting your salary to bitcoin doesn't somehow exempt you from paying income tax

Yeah, this is outside my wheelhouse since I've never accepted my bi-weekly pay in Bitcoin.

Yup. It combines gambling, pyramid/MLM, naivety, novelty, and FOMO for a perfect storm of a zero sum financial game.

Hopefully he's taking the bonus money in a more traditional form of payment.

Unless he's desperate for the money, he should be immediately converting the amount of his tax liability and holding the bitcoin. He likely got paid weekly as is typical, so he was getting more bitcoin as the value went down to equal what he was owed in USD.

Yeah but he is also getting incentives for each playoff win
I want to say it was $500K last week and this week and will be another $1 million if they win NFC championship plus additional for Super Bowl win.

It was an incentive laden deal.

exactly and he is going to get that at todays btc pricing. in 5 years that will be worth 10x what it is today. not a bad return.

if you think btc is a zero sum game....you need to look at the chart and zoom the frick out. quite a trend when you do.

buy ETH to avoid the wash sale and just HODL until the price recovers. (BTC and ETH follow each other pretty closely.)
It will recover and likely increase much more.

A free 10X!!!

The bottom line is that it's stupid when players announce this shite. He might as well announce he is taking x% of his pay in food.

Capitalism and the stock market are zero sum. If one person gains, someone loses.

Sure it is. Dollars and bitcoin are fungible, and can both be exchanged for goods and services. Either the team can "pay him in bitcoin"...or, he can take his dollars and then convert them into bitcoin himself. This is exactly what he will be doing whenever he buys food. When players announce they are "taking part of their salary in bitcoin", they might as well be saying "global currency markets exist". It's purely performative and dumb.

Receiving salary in Bitcoin is just idiotic unless you're not going to touch it for years.

Probably a good thing for most of these players who blow through their money pretty quickly.

That math looks like bullshite and this was also part of a sponsorship/partnership with Cash App. So he probably made even more.

He should have just tweeted “I don’t like Bitcoin”.

no different than a player saying they are putting a certain % in the stock market or people on here braggin about putting a certain amount in 401k, roth, ira etc

its and investment. he is betting the market goes up over time, same as investing in stocks but the volitilty is greater in crypto. but so are the rewards for the patient.
