then why do we have non-LSU fans in here and why are we promoting guys like Big Russ and D-Wade for similar reasons?

Actually, rehab projects go I'll take Vick over beckham. Remember after the Riley cooper incident he was the first player on the team to offer a hand.

I'm not an LSU fan, I'm also not talking about being a role model in the traditional sense. I don't know if he has a charity of his own but I do know he's participated in charitable functions.

I'm talking about him being a more positive image for a young black man to aspire to become.

Rehab projects? Beckham had one game where he went mental. Vick went to prison for a dog fighting ring. Those aren't really comparable.

we're not talking about "rehab projects"

vick is just the easiest example, but that whole gangta bullshite of that era was terrible and we had a generation of shitty black role models. OBJ is the antithesis of those guys in terms of image, which is what hendo (and the article in the OP) is discussing

I've always wondered this myself.

Fair enough. But to act as if he's some kind of "role model" is BS.

Eta; he started a brawl last year in St. Louis.

because of "toxic black masculinity" as the author puts it, or "lower class/trash culture" as i put it

there are the same issues with white people but the proliferation is much smaller in scope in terms of population %

channing tatum would get called a **** in most trailer parks, to use the author's example

if urban/black males are going to look up to a black male athlete, there aren't many better examples

you can't go all the way to one extreme like russell wilson b/c he comes off as fake to those guys

Well, he is an undersized dude that plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Off the field he is an well educated articulate individual who lives his life well, avoiding trouble. If that isn't good enough for you, frick off.

He's keeping it on the down low.

It's a term Black men use for being hetero, but occasionally enjoying the company of another man.

they claim they aren't gay, but having a penis in your mouth is gay, regardless of what u try to call it. You are gay or BI.

There are hundreds of better examples in the NFL alone. OBJ just has the stats and highlight catches to catch the spotlight.

Right and you can't even point to a guy like Colston in a lot of examples because he's not a star. A lot of young black males from lower class neighborhoods don't grow up wanting to be an investment banker or the president of the United States. They want to be like that dude who's on TV catching touchdown passes and doing hilarious dances in the endzone afterwards.

If that dude who's catching passes and dancing also happens to be articulate and clean cut, that's a net positive for society.

Cam Newton probably falls in the same category of Beckham, charming smile, funny, great to kids but he's not so straight laced that he seems like a phony bitch. Cam's negatives to a lot of people on this board are what would attract him to someone in a poor black community. If they're attracted to his on field "swag" maybe they'll want to emulate his charisma and charm as well. (Hopefully they skip the stolen laptop part).

He started a brawl or a brawl started between other players after beckham was hit late for the 437th time that game?
