Dont have them.

Think about it. If you put these teams in places that have NFL teams (i.e. major markets) they are going to fail. If you put them in smaller tier 2 markets they may have a bit of success but no on in NY is going to tune in to watch Omaha vs Lincoln.

But...if you follow the WWE/Boxing/MMA model and have say 10 teams without a city affiliation they could schedule neutral site games all over the country. "The XFL will be in Dallas on April 24th...Dont miss it!"

You drive up demand to attend in person and you dont lose interest from the casual viewer.

Depends on if the new league is pushing the entertainment value or the competitiveness of the play.

Non-LA based Lakers fans dont give a frick about LA.

Plenty of people root for whoever Lebron plays for.

And plenty of people in Dallas dont give 2 fricks about the Stars.

The XFL will succeed/fail because of the younger generation, and they might be the least City-loyal generation ever.

I think the XFL should focus on capturing the disenfranchised NFL fans.

Not going to crush someone for thinking outside the box but this is not an idea i think would work. For one your immediately double your traveling costs, not great for a new league thats going to have a ton of startup overhead as it is.

And while you're right there are a lot of fans out there that root for teams that don't play in their city, these are usually reserved for historic powers, which will take decades to establish.

A team with Tebow/JFF etc...would have fans or at least interested parties.

sure but that's 2 or 3 teams, what about the other 5 or 6?

And also i think you overrate the appeal of both of those guys. it's not enough to carry a fanbase on its own

Yeah but you could also centralize training facilities which bring some of the fixed costs of traditional leagues way down. Would also eliminate the problem of relative attraction of certain orgs having better facilities or just a generally better location to live.

I tend to agree with OP. I can see having league loyalty over team loyalty, particularly with them having just a handful of teams.

Yeah here have been many startup leagues that basically go unnoticed that just try and be NFL lite. One league even tried to have localized players (people that played high school/college ball in a he area and he team was based). It didn’t work.

I for one think there is a market for Lamar Jackson to play QB at the professional level. Make a league around excitement of play, the game being the product rather than jerseys, tickets, etc, and you may just survive

That's an interesting idea. They could get a lot of fans for each team because it makes it easier to gain fans from all over the entire country if they aren't affiliated with a particular city.

The only problem I see with that is that there won't be enough fans in any particular city on game day. So, for example... a team might have 1 million fans, but they would be spread out across the entire country and wouldn't congregate together when they play in a random city.

Even E-Sports teams(video game teams)are starting to go to a city affiliation model in order to grab traditional sports fans. Creating a team without a city affiliation simply does not work.

Those are renowned brands with well known players. The XFL will be the exact opposite.

I actually think that’s a pretty good idea

You could even have like 8 of your ‘base’ franchises have a central location (Vegas, Oakland, Slidell, Orlando, etc) and then have your rover squads who don’t have an allegiance to a certain city

They should try to put players from the area, on the teams.

You have a team In Birmingham, and you have Auburn,Bama, etc players on it, and there is some interest locally. Do this for all teams, as you can.

I don't think this would work as is, but with some tweaks, it could.

Instead of the traditional home cities/stadiums, if you wanted to go away from one city, have it regional. Basically a team from each Power 5 Conference region, plus a few others. The "SEC" team could play in Birmingham, Nashville, ATL, Baton Rouge, etc. Pick 4 stadiums each year to host and that is your home games. Mix it up half/half between college stadiums and pro stadiums, if that can work.

The "Big Ten" area team can have games at Michigan/Ohio State, then toss in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Pac 12 can have San Fran, Oregon, Los Angeles (take your pick of stadium) and Phoenix. Big XII has their pick of Texas stadiums as well as KC or St Louis, and Indy. Throw in some East Coast locations around Carolina and up towards DC for the ACC, then pick 3 more teams to get to 8 teams.
