I am of the opinion many current games are going to start dying off as the lack of real value to sponsors and cities becomes apparent. The old line bowls will stay but continue to diminish in stature. it will be accelerated for the downline bowls if the playoff is expanded to 8.

They make their money on TV not gate revenue.

Bowls are a TV advertisement these days. There's a waiting list of sponsors to pick up new bowls or bowls that lose sponsorship.

As mentioned, ticket sales just aren't the best indicator anymore.

You also have to look at the teams. UGA played in it last year and is disappointed with how the season ended. Then you have Baylor - who I'm sure is excited to be there - but is simply a smaller fan base.

is kind of enticing to bring the family when you can get 4 seats for a sugar bowl for about $40. UGA vs Baylor is a decent matchup and should be a decent game.

bowls are a boomer relic of the past. millennials and zoomers would rather spend their time on things which matter. that's why playoffs will break record highs and bowls will break record lows

well yeah, for Terrace level endzone seats

The lower level tickets are still going to around $200 each. I don't see a lot of people from UGA even making the trip for the Sugarbowl so it's not too surprising

And those ratings are starting to sink for many of the lower tier games and they were not high to start. ESPN has been tightening their belt of content spending and some of those bowls down the totem pole may be affected.

We went to the Western Michigan/Wisconsin Cotton bowl a few years ago for $35. That's two tickets, parking pass and fees.

That is a completely different scenario

UGA just got dominated in Atlanta and had their playoff hopes crushed. The fan base as a whole is not excited to travel/pay for a post season sugerbowl matchup against Baylor

The ratings are fine and more than enough to support these bowls. They bought all the bowl TV rights for the December and January programming and they're doing just fine.

Maybe bowl committees and their cities can do things like stage more kickoff classics. This could give northern cities opportunities to stage their “bowl” games over Labor Day weekend or Columbus Day weekend (or another weekend with significance to the area) when their weather is more pleasant. College football starts a week before NFL in most years, so these bowls can capitalize on preseason hype to end the summer.

The old line bowls are no relic and will survive but at some point the new kids on the block are going to start failing. Many are ego exercises that are not bearing fruit for the host city or sponsor.

Bowls like the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl and the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl are like some sad joke.

It's expensive as hell to go to games these days with a family
