Mike Babcock's brief tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets is over before he even coached a single game for the club.

Babcock's resignation comes in the wake of allegations surfacing over the past week that he violated players' privacy when he asked to see photos on their cellphones. The allegations were first presented when former NHL player Paul Bissonnette said on Tuesday's edition of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast that Babcock asked Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner to show him his camera roll before displaying those photos via AirPlay on a wall in the coach's office.
"Enough with putting guys on the spot in the coaches room asking them to link their phones up to AirPlay mode and grilling them," Bissonette said after the episode was released. "I've had tons of players confirm it."
Babcock and Jenner released statements through the Blue Jackets on the same day of the podcast that denied the photo request was anything nefarious. Babcock said that while meeting with players and staff that he asked them to share -- off their phones -- family photos as part of the process to know them better while claiming what was portrayed on the podcast was "a gross misrepresentation of those meetings and extremely offensive."
Jenner said Babcock asked him about his family, where he was from, his upcoming wedding and hockey-related items. Jenner said that Babcock asked whether he had any photos of his family and that he was "happy to share some with him." He also said Babcock shared photos of his family with Jenner.
"I thought it was a great first meeting and a good way for us to start to build a relationship," Jenner said in the statement. "To have this blown out of proportion is truly disappointing."
quote:
Blue Jackets All-Star forward Johnny Gaudreau confirmed to ESPN last week that he had shown Babcock photos that were on his phone per Babcock's request. Gaudreau said that he had "a great meeting" with Babcock.
"We got to share things together, pictures of our family," Gaudreau said. "I was a little upset to see the way it was handled and how it came out. ... but nothing you can do about it. We got off to a great start, had a great meeting with him and looking forward to working together."
Former NHL defenseman Mike Commodore, who previously played for Babcock and has been critical of the coach, said he heard that behavior also occurred when Babcock was the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Don't follow hockey but it was hilarious to see the libs in the hockey media come to the defense of this coach because a Barstool podcast broke the news.
Turns out a fun podcast did the media's job better than actual journalists.

While unconventional, it doesn’t sound like anyone that was actually asked to show pictures had issues. I’m not a big NHL guy and this is the first I’m hearing of this.
Were there players that actually met with the coach that said something inappropriate happened?

I’m a big hockey guy (played growing up, follow the Preds religously)
Spittin Chiclets is about as a cool as Pat McAfeee on Gameday
Biz, while funny in small doses is a clown and total shill for the NHLPA
Babcock, while having a bit of a sordid history (for 21st century standards) deserves to coach again and is a damn good coach.
This is an attempt by (sadly) the US’s most influential hockey media outlet to cancel one person they don’t like. Ryan Whitney is a complete bitch as well .
Unfortunately, off the ice a good portion of the NHL guys are soft as charmin

I don’t get it.
The players all said nothing inappropriate happened.

Good info. I bought the initial story that Babcock is a psycho, but this sounds like an overblown coordinated takedown.

I think Babcock became a sacrificial lamb for the NHL when the topic of mental health started to percolate into the collective zeitgeist of the league.
I doubt hes any worse than 95% of the coaches from the 60s-early 2000s
I’d love for him to coach the Preds

Your MAGA podcast got a coach fired for no reason. None of the players had an issue with it.
Very Murican of you!

That's not why people were defending Babcock. Multiple CBJ players came our and said their encounter with him was a consensual sharing of pictures on their phone and they had no problem with it. Those players (Capitan Boone Jenner, and the best player on the team Johnny Gaudreau).
Apparently there was a conversation that took place with a younger player not in the facility where Babcock had the phone for several minutes going through it. It's speculated that this player is Adam Fantilli, our 3rd Overall pick and hopeful stud center wever waited 25 years for.
That's why people initially wanted Babcock fired (spitting chicklets), then not fired (statements from veteran players) and now fired (new info about a non-consensual evaluation and search of another players phone).

This is obviously untrue especially based on the leaked info.

You’re a fricking retard. The guy that perpetuated the whole thing, Biz, is a complete shill for leftist social causes

Jarmo should have never hired Babcock in the first place. This is all on him.

If Jarmo goes then so does JD. They were in this together.

I LOVE hockey because I don't know much about it. I just watch it cause it's like magic.
So ... Babcock was the coach the Leafs fired a few years back. Turns out, the Leafs still suck, and Babcock wasn't the problem. Right?
And .... this "mental health" twist you mention ... Babcock was a a little too "old school" for the Leafs' young stars, and he "lost the team". Is that right?
Last Q -- if the Team Captain and Johnny Hockey didn't have a problem with Babock ... who did? And why?
Thanks in advance. 3 weeks til hockey starts!

i guess it was Fantilli?? Which doesn’t bode well for the Jackets if they are allowing 2023’s version of Jack Eichel mandate personnel decisions before even playing an official game in the show
Babcock coaching the jackets would be filthy- they have alot of intriguing pieces

I don't think Fantilli is mandating anything. He seems to have expressed concern with his phone being investigated by his head coach without consent.
We don't know if he reported it to the front office first or not.
