The NFL has decided to table discussions regarding the Rooney Rule where it would create an incentive system for teams who hire minority coaches and general managers, according to Jim Trotter of NFL.com.

quote:

The Rooney Rule, which was established in 2003, will see some changes, however, as Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported on Monday. Teams are now required to interview at least two external minority candidates for head coaching jobs and at least one minority candidate for any coordinator position, per Pelissero. Along with those changes, clubs must interview one external minority candidate for senior football operations and general manager jobs. League and team office positions also are required to include minority and/or female applicants for senior-level positions.

quote:

As it relates to possible compensatory picks being handed to teams who hire minority candidates, Super Bowl champion coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dungy told CBS Sports Radio's Tiki and Tierney on Monday that he was not in favor of that specific addition, but understands where the league is coming from with the proposal.

quote:

"I'm personally not for it," Dungy said. "I can see the coach's point of view, especially the minority coaches. Hey, I don't want to think I got hired just because you're going to get an extra draft choice. I want to get hired because I'm the best person. I don't want that extra draft choice to help me. I don't want you to think I need more to succeed. I understand all that. "I think it's kind of like the pass interference rule of last year. People felt like something needed to be done. Maybe it's not exactly the right thing, but hopefully, this sparks some conversation and maybe we come up with a different kind of incentive. I'm not for [draft compensation for minority hires] personally, but I understand where they're coming from."

Idk if the Rooney rule is necessary but they definitely don’t need to be giving freaking draft picks for hiring a minority coach. Glad they tabled it for now.

So basically what anyone with even a modicum of competitive spirit would say. shite was flat out insulting.

When I first saw this scroll across espn a few days ago, I spit my beer out. Wondering if I read that correctly. Then I thought about it for a while and said fine, if we’re playing by these rules, as a saints fan, fire Super Bowl winning coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis and hire some minorities to jump up 16 spots. Use the added/enhanced picks to pile up draft picks and trade to move up to #1 to steal Trevor Lawrence. If we are using their logic, this is perfectly plausible right?!?! ???? What a joke.

Better yet: trade Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis to add more picks to help move up to #1.

Something id be interested in seeing is the amount of black coaches in the coaching pool compared to white coaches.

How many aspring white coaches v the number of black coaches. How long does it take on average a black position coach to be able to get a shot for HC, how long on average does a take a white position coach to get a shot. Not only that, typically how do these coaches do once they get a shot somewhere. Are black coaches given the same leeway that a white coach is somewhere with regards to success and whatnot?

At the end of the day I get really annoyed at the concept of minority based hiring policies in any arena. Whether it be the NFL or a hardware store.

If you just look at African Americans that's 13% of the total population in the whole entire country. You drill that down to basic math that would mean in an absolute perfect scenario where the most qualified person gets the job, only 13 out of very 100 candidates are even available to get that job. It's not an even playing field just on available candidates so why do we have to force a 1:1 ratio ideology on hiring in general? If I have 100 jobs available there are only 13 African Americans available, but I have to use some forced diversity protocol for the other 87 that don't even have an available person to take that job?

frick out of here with this shite. Best person gets the job. Math works itself into at some point anyways. There are 96 head coaches/coordinators in the NFL. If there are 12 of those positions manned by an African American then basic math. And that's just a macro look at population in general. Not factoring in demographics such as age, gender, etc.

Then you factor in you're drilling down to 96 incredibly specific jobs where the qualifications are incredibly rare to have that job, the fact that there is even 1 is extremely extraordinary.
